T0 all 'whom it muy comfy-n Be it'known that l, tlirnis'rran M. Snor-- TEN, citizen 'of-the United States7 residing have invented certain new and useful lmproveinents in ll'lultiple Stanchions; and I do hereby declaretlic following to be a full. clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use l the same, reference being` had to the accompanying drawings. and to let-ters or figures of reference marked thereon. which form a part of this specilication.
fThis invention relates to multiple'stanchions, and'inore particularly to that'class of multiple stanchions adapted to be controlled by a common mechanism, so that all of the stanchions may be operated simultaneously.
The object of this invention is to provide a vmultiple stanchion adapted to be durable, useful and capable of beingy adapted to any building'.
il further object of thisv invention is to straining' devices of which may be simultaneously operated to restrain or 'tree an animal, or in which any desired number of the restraining devices'proper inaT be ac-` tuated, or remain inoperative.
A further object of the invention is to provide a stanchion adapted tofacilitatc the housing of. .a number' o'll animals by eliminating the usual drawbacks of such devices. p p
With these and other lobjects in View, this invention consists-in thepeculiar construetion. and combination oic the parts ot a multiple stanchion as hereinafter described and more particularly1 pointed ont in the ap' pended claims.
tieferring to the drawings wherein similar reference numerals indicate similar parts` wherever used, Figure l is a perspective view of the multiple stanchion. Fig, 2 is a l'ront elevation ot one of the stanchion units. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line 3 3, Fito'. Q. Fig. t is a detail isection through the lower part of the restraining device shcnving the spring'. Fig'. 5 is a dctailisection through one ot the guards showingthe spring'. G is a vertical section on line o-i (ilt Fig. Q.
lteterei'ice numeral 7 represeifits aA sill ot concrete -erthe like formed on the Hoor-ofa. stable. Secured by bolts or embedded into the sill are a plurality`- of upright-s S preferably formed of piping` and having at their upper ends a flattened portion 9. lleloiv the tlattened portion 9, the uprights are provided with threaded 'lsliaped nipples l0, which receive additional piping l1. adapted to define the different stalls as 4shown in Fig'. l.
irdjaeent the beginning of the flattened portion is anon-rotatable shaft 1Q, which is prevented from movement in anyY direcwheel t3, and adapted to be controlled by a pawl 1S. mountedoii a bracket 19. lt will thus be seen that a` movementot' the handle ll will cause lthe cog-wheel 13 to rotate the cog-Wheel 17J which will rotate the `shaft l5,` subjectto the action ot the pawl 1S. ASecured to the shaft 15, and rotating' therewith are collars 20-Q0. lVound around the collars 2G-'20 and -tastened at one end thereto are chains 21h02. the purpose ol which will he hereii'iatter set torth. Mid'- Walv between the nprio'hts the shaft 13. is Iprovided with two chains 29e-:2l which are Wound around the shat't 15. and then pass downwardly through a tube 25. placed transversely through the shaft l2. The purpose ot these chains will he hereinafter de scribed.
Pivotally supported to the sill T by a chain 2li is a restrainingY device or stair eliion composed ot' two pivotallvY connected (at 26') bow-shaped sections 2T-QS. which are adapted to be held apart at their upper ends 295l0 b v means of a. leal spring 3l. inserted above the pivot (see Fig: l.) The chains 'lwl-l are connorted to the upper portions 9 2() ot" thc stanchion. as at The chains are so arranged that when they are wound np upon the sha lit. 1.5, they bring' the parts QT--QS ot the stanchioii together against' the action of the spring' 31, by
means ot the inward pull upon theparts 29- O, causing said parts to move from the position shown in dotted' lines 272-28 and Y 25) 30 shown -in-Fig. 2. The ull eX- 36-37 are joined by a pivoted yoke member 38, which bears slidably upon'the upper sur'- face of the-shaft 12. Placed within the bracket 33'is a leaf spring 39, which bearsl against the upright 8 and the members 35 and forces themembers'35'outwardly and 'v away from the upright 8 toward the center' of the shaft 12, the member 38 sliding along the shaft 12.
The; chains 21-22 heretofore described are wound about the rotatable shaft l5, and
25 pass downwardly under pulleys 40 supported by'brackets 41, upon the uprights S. From this point the chains run inwardly and are fastened at 21-22 tothe yokeI members 38-38 in such a manner that when so the chains 21-29 are wound ont-he shaft 15, the member 35 takes the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2. ,By rotating the shaft 15'to close the stanchions Q7 28 the chains controlling the members will also be 35 wound up and will cause the members 35 to be drawn toward the upright 8 against the action ofthe spring 39 and will come to restat a point about half-way between the stanchions and the uprights, Jthis posi- 40 tion being regulated by the length of the chain. The function of these members 35 is to form a guard uponeach side of the stanchions toprevent an animal :from inserting its head into the space between the stanchions and 'the uprights.
When the stanchion is in an open position the guards take the position shown in dotted lines 35-35 in Fig. Q due to the spring forcing the members outwardly.
'50 Should it be desired to leave a stanchien in closed position to confine an animal, while the other stanchions are opened, there is provided a pin 42, which is 'inserted through the links of the chains 23-2-1 so that the pin .55 will bear against the upper part of the tube 25, thus preventing further movement of the stanchion members 27 #128, wh ile the other stanchions are free to move. By rotating the shaft l5, the chains will be wound or R0 unwound upon the shaft 15, thus actuating the guards andthe stanchion members of the several restraining units,
Considerable variationof the specific ectails of this invention may be resorted to -without departing from the spirit thereof.
