ANIMAL-EELEASING DEVICE.
Application filed Qctober 31, 1814.
To all axiom it may concern Be it known that I, Eans'r Nonnmo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wittenberg, in the county of Perry and State of Missouri. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Animal- Releasing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in animal releasing devices and its object is to produce a device by means of which a number of horses may be simultaneously released from their stalls in a barn or stable in time of fire or other emergency.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described in the following specification, pointed out in the claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of said specification and in which- Figure l is an end view of a part of a barn or stable with a part of the wall cut away to show the application of my invention. 2 is a section taken on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 1s a side elevation of the invention attached to the manger wall in the stable. Fin. d is a similar view showing the halter rope released. Fig. 5 is a sec- "ion taken on line 5 5 of Fig. 4:. Fig. 6 is view of the slide employed. Fig. 7 is a w of the guide employed. Fig. 8 is a view taken on line 88 of Fig. 7. Fig. 9 is a section taken on line 99 of Fi 7. Fi 10 is a section taken on line 1010 of Fig. 5. Fig. 11 is a side view of the cam wheel showing its operation. Fig. 12 is a perspective of the frame of the device.
Like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The reference numeral 1 designates a barn or stable and 2 the manger wall therewithin apertured at To the wall 2 the frame 3 is secured by a bolt l projected into openings 2 and provided with a shock-absorbing spring 2 and said frame is formed with a pair of inclined legs 5 5 supported by braces 6, 6 and connected by brace 7. An aperture 8 is formed in each of the legs 5 and through the same a rotary shaft 9 eX- tends which extends through all of the stalls in a line in the stable and through the legs of each frame in each stall. Upon the end of the shaft 9 outside the stable a crank 10 is secured by which said shaft may be ro- Specification of etters Eatent.

tated and said crank is normally retained in inoperative position by a keeper 11 from engagement with which it may be manually removed when desired. Upon the shaft 9 a guide beam 12 is loosely disposed and said beam is formed with tapered cleats 13, 14: which are spaced away from each other by a passageway 15 that serves as a guide way for a slide 16 bifurcated at one end to form prongs 17, 18 the passageway 19 between which terminates in an enlarged opening 20. Referring again to the guide beam 12 the same is provided with cleats 21, 21 that serve to retain slide 16 in position in its passageway. Upon the shaft 9 a cam wheel is disposed in the path of the slide 16 and in contact therewith. A ratchet 23 .de fast LO shaft 9 in proximity to cam wheel 22 is in engagement with a pawl 24: carried by the guide beam 12 and a spring 25 secured to one leg 5 of the frame also engages the ratchet 23 to permit its rotation in one direction with the shaft 9 but not in the opposite direction. A spring 26 secured to the guide beam presses upon the pawl 2a to retain the same in operative position. To the slide 16 a bracket 27 is secured through which a screw 28 extends that is threaded into a threaded opening in the cleat 21 and between the head 29 of said screw and the bracket 27 a spring 80 is disposed about said screw abutting said head and bracket the purpose of the spring 30 being to force the slide 16 down against the cam 22.
31 is an eye-bolt, which is formed with a head 32, and which extends through an opening 33 in the guide beam 12 and through the passageway 19 in the slide 16, the head 32 of said bolt being of greater diameter tha the passageway 19 but of smaller diameter than the opening 20 in said slide. To the eye-bolt a cord 34 is secured which extends through an opening 35 in the frame 3 and to which the hitching ring 36 is secured that carries the snap 37 that car ies the halter strap 38. The guide beam 12 is connected by a spring 39 to the brace 7 and by said spring retained in normal position which is the position shown in full lines in Fig. 3.
Operation: lhe horse in tugging upon the strap 38 may possibly move the guide beam and connections into the position shown dotted in Fig. 3 but this will not in any way affect the mechanism. To release one horse at a time the snap hook 37 may be removed from the ring 36 in the usual manner; to release all of the animals at once the shaft 9 is turned by meansof the crank 10 in a direction away from the frame 3. The pawl 24 and spring 25 will ride over the ratchet 23 and permit rotation of the same. The cam wheel 22 in rotating with the shaft 9 will raise the slide 16 intothe position 7 shown in Fig. i bringing the opening in that slide into alinement with the opening "33 in the guide beam and permitting withdrawalf of the'eye-bolt 31 from the slide,
' beam and frame 3, thus freeing the animals.
What is claimed is:
- 1. In an animal releasing device, the combination of a support, a legged frame carried thereby, .a rotary shaft journaled in said legs, a guide beam loose upon said shaft, a flexible connection between said guide beam and legs, a slide carried by said guide beam, a cam wheel fast upon said shaft in the plane of said slide, tension mechanism connecting said guide beam and slide whereby the latter member is retained in 1 frictional engagement with said cam wheel,
an eye-bolt releasably carried by said slide and guide beam and means associated with said rotary shaft for rotating the same to cause the cam wheel carried thereby to move said slide out of normal by release said eye-bolt. V
2. In an animal releasing device, the combination of a support, a legged frame carried thereby, a rotary shaft journaled in said legs, a terminally apertured guide beam 7 loose upon said shaft, a flexible connection between said guidebeam and legs, a terminally bifurcated slide carried by said guide Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the V Washington, D. 0.
position and therebeam, said bifurcation being larger at its inception than at its termination; a cam wheel fast upon said shaft in the plane of said slide, tension mechanism connecting said guide beam and slide whereby the latter member is retained infrictional engage; 'ment Wltl'l' said cam wheel, an 'eye-bolt pro-- shaft, a flexible connection between said guide beam and legs, a slide carried bys'aid guide beam, tension mechanism connecting said guide beam and slide whereby the latter member is impelled toward said shaft,
an eyebolt releasably carried by said guide beam and slide while the latter member'is in normal position, means for rotating said shaft and means carried by said shaft for frictional engagement with said slide whereby the same is moved-out of normal position to effect the release of said eye-bolt.
In testimonythat I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aiiixed mysignature in the presence of two subscriblng witnesses.
