Fig. 2 is a view in perspective ot' the neekportion of a-milk-bottle, showing the closure applied thereto to seal the bottle, -lfiez :l is a view in perspective ot the closure detached, with the spout open. Fig. Yt is .i side View of the closure detached. with the spout open. Fig. 5 ia a view in persi'ieetive. showing the neck ci a bottle provided with my improved closure with the spout open as in Pouring milk from the bottle. Fig'. (3 is a. plan View of a blank ot flexible inaterial from which the disk is formed` before the same is folded to disk-form. Fie'. T is a cross-section of the closure taken on the broken line 7,*7 in Fig. l. on an enlarged Scale, Fig. 8 is a plan view ot a closure embodying my invent-ion in a incdilied t'orni. Fie'. 9 is a view in perspective of the Isaine with the spout. open. Fig. 10 is a plan view of the blank adapf-'i to be folded to diskform in carrying out my invention as shown in Fig. 8.
The principal object ot the invention is to provide ay sealing-elosnre tor milk-bottles and the like. having as a constituent thereof av folded spout-portion connected along its mouth-end with the body of the closure by a. weakened line of fracture, and adapted when separated from the body-portion along said line of fracture to be unfolded and'opened out to form a spout through which the contents can be poured from the bottle.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 7 inclusive, wherein my invention is shown in preferred form,
the lblank shown in Fig. G is adapted to be folded along the convergenty lines l--1 and the convergent lines 2-Q the closure being thus caused to assume disk-form with a tapered, box-plait, 3, extending from one edge d1ametrically across the disk. l
The closure is provided with a weakened line of fracture, 4l, extending transversely across a wider portionof the outer member of the plait, and with awakened lines of fracture, 5 5, extending from the respective ends of the line el transversely ot' the respective inner members ot' the plait.
It will be understood that the sheet' of flexible material of which' the closure.l is made, is so seored o r otherwise weakened along the respective lines ot Afracture -land so that it can. he readilylorokenor severed along said lines to .separate that part o'lthe plait nearer the center of the closure aloner said lines troni the lnnl,\'portion otn the eldsure, permitting the plait to he unfolded For opened out to the torni shown in Figs. '23. l. and 5 to t'ori'n a Spont Il tl'iront'h which the contents ot the bottle can he poured. 80
The closure is provided with a crease. (3.
valong;a the longitudinal middle ol the outer i'neinl'ier of the plait. intersecting' the line ot tractnre. 4', which taeiiitates the opening' out ot the spout to the forni rshown in Figs. 3, 4, and
'lo facilitate maintaining` the apont .in open position the lines of fracture. fie-5, are extended slightly l'arther away troni the center ot' the disk than the line o'iltraeture.
Fl. so that as.' the spout is opened out, the
edges of the spout formed on the inner inemv hers ot' the plait by' the line, 51e-1 wedge and hind against the-edge formed bv the line, 4, on the ln'nly-poriion ot the closure as shown in Fig. 3.
' It it is not desired to pour ont all ot' the contents of the 4bottle at once, after the desired quantity has been poured the, spout can be folded and pressed back into suhstantially its original position, the edges ot the mouth of the spout and the body-por tin ofthe closure meetingquite closely along the lines a and 5, so that while the closure' may not thereafter be absolutely water-tigl'it, it serves to eliectively close the bottle and to exclude dust and dirt there from.
The closure is preferably coated with parattin, wax or the like, and its plaited portions particularly along the vedge of the disk are compressed, so that they are reduced in' flexible material of indefinite shape can be vplaited in the form described and a disk afterward stamped or cut therefrom of the 1 desired size,
AThe closure may be made of any flexible material having sufficient 'strength and body to meet the conditions of use, as heavy paper or the like.
In F ig. 10, I have shown a blank' adapted to be folded along the lines, 8 and 9, to form a single plait, 1Q, as shown in F ig. 8,v and provided with weakened lines of fracture, 11, iii` the outer member of the plait and 12 in the inner member of the'plait, extending transversely across a wider portion of the plait and provided with. creases or fold.- lines, 13 and 14, whereby when the plaited portion is severed along the lines 11 and 12,
,it can be unfolded and opened out to the position shown in Fig. 9, forming a spout 10a with a square mouth.
The size of the disk and the conguration of its edgeeportion may be.varied to adapt the closure for the bottle with which it is to be used.
The closure unbroken along the weakened lines of fracture is inserted tightly in the mouth of the bottle to seal the same until such time as it is desired to remove part or all of the contents of the bottle7 whereupon it is broken or se fered along said lines of fracture, by means of a knife or other instrument, permitting the spout'to be unfolded and opened out as above described.
'lVhat I claim. as new and desire to secure .by Letters Patent iS- 1. A closure for milk-bottles and the like, comprising a disk-shaped body 'of flexible material having a plait formed' Withtransverse weakened lines of fracture defining the mouth of a spout-shaped portion thereof.
2. A closure for milkbottles and the like, comprising a disk-shaped body of `flexible material having a tapered plait formed wlth weakened lines of fracture extending transversely across a wider portion of the plait defining the mouth of a spout-shaped pore. y
ti n thereof.
. Agclosure for milk-bottles andthe like,
arross the disk 4. A closure V for nulli-bottles and the like,
comprisiiigr a disk-shaped body of flexible .material having a tapered box-plait formed with a central, longitudinal crease and with transverse weakened lines of fracture across a wider portion of the plait defining the mouth of a spout-shaped portion thereof.
A. closure for milk-bottles and the like,
comprising a disk-shaped body of `flexible material having a plait formed with transverse weakened lines of fracture defining .the mouth of a spout-shaped portion thereof, said line of fracture of the inner meinber of the plait. extending away from the center of the disk to a greater degree than the line of fracture of the outer member of the plait` I Y A closure for milk-bottles and the like, comprising a `tiek-shaped bodv of flexible material having a plait extending convergeutly from one edge of the diskformed with transverse weakened lines of fracture defining the mouthof a. spout-shaped portion. thereof.
7. A closure for milk-bottles and the like, eon'ij'irising a disk-shaped body of flexible material having a tapered box-plait extending from one edge of the disk diainetrically formed with weakened' 'lines of fracture defining the mouth of. a spout-shaped portion thereof.
S. it closure for milk-bottles and the like, comprising a disk-shaped body of flexible material vhaving a plait formed with transverse weakened lines of fracture defining' the mouth of a spout-shaped portion there of, the members of said plait being of re` duced thickness-along the edge of. the disk and held together by paraffin or the like.
9. A. `closure for milk-bottles and the like, comprising a disleshaped body of flexible material having as a constituent. part thereof a folded spout connected with the body of the closure by a weakened line of fracture along'the mouth-portion of the spout.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 31st day of May, 19,13.
