Specification of Letterslatent.
Patented se t. 22, 1914..
Application filed December 17, 1913. Serial No. 807,221.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLEsIJ. ALLERs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Container, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in containers, and has for an object to provide a folding container or receptacle which when folded will Joe locked against accidental opening.
Another object of the invention is to provide a container .which may be stamped. from a single blank and folded so as to pro cluce a tight receptacle capable of carrying liquid, and with securing or looking attachments for preventing the accidentalunfolding or opening of the container.
In carrying out the object of the lnvention a blank isstamped or cut froma single piece of material, and is variously scored and cut so as to provide proper slots, tabs or extensions, and also proper flaps, where-- by when the container is folded to its correct position the tabs, extensions and slots inay interlock in order to hold the container in its folded position. In cutting out or stamping the blank, and in creasing the same, the various parts are so formed and arranged that when folded into a container or box structure there will be no opening in the ends of the container except near the top, whereby liquid may be placed in the container without danger of leaking therefrom. In connection with the topof the container a lid is provided which is arranged with looking tabs on the end flaps which are designed to be thrust or tucked beneath the end flaps of the box structure, whereby the lid is lockedin position without the necessity of providing slots in the end ofthe box, per s6.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 shows a-blank'cut out ready for folding; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the container in its folded position; Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the container with the lid open;
"Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 except that one of the ends is shown unlocked or partially opened.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numeral 1 indicates the body of the con- .tainer and 2 the lid which is formed integral with the body, as shown in Fig. 1; Lid 2 is provided with end flaps 3 and 4, and
with a side flap 5 connected at its ends withend flaps 3 and 4 through foldable extensions 6. The end flaps 3 and 4 are provided with looking tabs 7 and 8, respectively,
15 and 16 are provided which extend for the full length of the blank and provide for the end creases of the respectivemembers of the container. Lines of creasing 17 and 18 are provided which extend transversely of the blank defining the edges of the bottom and the two ends of body 1. The extensions 9 and 1Q are folded on lines 19 and 20 so that the same may properly fold, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The ends 13 and 14 are also provided with lines of creasing or scoring 21 and 22, whereby extra end locking members 23 and 24 are provided. Arranged parallel with lines 17 and 18 are transverse creases orscoring 25 and 26 which define the edges of the lid 2, as well as the edges of the end flaps 3 and 4 thereof. The extensions 6 are folded upon line 27 so as to provide a proper reinforcement or brace for the cor nor of the body 1. In connection with the ends 3 and 4, it will be observed that the locking tabs 7 and 8 extend substantially at right angles to each other, and are provided with scoring, or preferably lines of creasing, whereby the tabs may press inwardly so as to be tucked under the extensions 9 and 10, as shown in Fig. 2. After the blank has been cut out, as shown in Fig. 1, and provided with lines of creasing, which are preferably provided at the same time that the blank is cut out, the box may be folded to the position shown in Fig. 3, whereby the body 1 will be ready to receive any desired article.
In folding the box or container the sides and ends are bent up, and the extensions 9 and 10 are creased along lines 19 and 20, so
that these extensions may be folded over, as
shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and the pointed projections 28 thereof may be thrust through apertures 29 and 30arranged in the ends 13 and 14. After this has beeen done, the looking members 23 and 24 are bent over and the projections 31 and 32 arranged therein are inserted in slots 33 and 34 formed in the extensions 9 and 10. This completes the folding of the body of the box so that any goods desired may be placed therein. After the goods havebeen placed in position and it is desired to close the lid the same is moved over to the position shown in Fig. 2, extensions 6 being folded as shown in Fig. 3, and then the tabs 7 and 8 are tucked beneath the extensions 9 and 10, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, whereby the lid is locked against accidental opening. It will be observed that the various flaps on the lid overlapi the edges of the body and are positioned on the outside of the body whereby the contents oi the box are protected.
What I claim is- A container of the class described formed from a single blank, said blank having a body portion and a lid portion, said body portion having foldable ends and sides, and foldable extensions in the angle between the ends and sides, foldable extensions being adapted to be moved over against said ends, said lid being formed with ends having tabs thereon, a flap onone side and foldable bracing members in the angle between the ends and flap, whereby when said ends are contacting with the ends of said; body and said tabs are interlocked with said extensions the flap will fit tightly against one side of said body and said bracing members will be folded beneath the ends of said lid for pressing said flap against saidlast mentioned side, whereby there 1s presented. a
tightly fitting substantially telescoping lid.
In testimony whereof-I-have signed my Copies of this patent inay be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of: 13mm,
