NOAH O. WEIMER, OF GRAND JUNCTION, COLORADO.
HARNESS.
rosogrsr Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 10, inlet.
Application filed March '7, 1913. Serial No. 752,564.
To all whom it may comer/z Be it known that l, NOAH Gunners Vin- Mnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Grand Junction, county of Mesa, and tiltate of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Harness, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an i mprovcment in harness, and it consists specifically of an improved support and connection for the blinders, by which the blinders and their supports are detachably connected.
An object of the invention is to produce an improved bridle having blinders attached thereto, in combination with stays or holders for the blinders, and releasable connections for fastening the stays or holders and the blinders together. The provision of this improved separable connection permits separation of the blinders from the stays or holders without breaking any of the parts, under the conditions in which the stays or holders are usually broken by the horse wearing the bridle.
With the :l'oregoing, and other objects in view, I have illustrated my invention in the accompanying drawings in which,-
Figure l is a side elevation of a portion of a bridle in which my invention is embodied. Fig. 2 is a front edge view of a portion of the blinder and the stay or holder, illustrating the releasable connection fastening the blinder and the stay or holder together. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. at is a fragmentary side elevation of a portion of a blinder illustrating a modified structure. Fig. 5 is a plan or edge view of the structure shown in Fig. 4, and Fig. 6 is a sectional view on the line 6-6 of Fig. 4.
In the structure illustrated in Fig. 1 the blinder 1 may be of any suitable design and dimensions and is supported upon the side2 of the bridle. The stay or holder 3 extends obliquely downwardly and forwardly from the top of the bridle, and terminates along side of the blinder 1, on the inner side of the blinder in the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. A metallic clamping element 4: embraces the stay or holder 3 near the lower extremity thereof, and has one end projecting through the blinder and engaged by a nut 5, which is capable of manual manipulation to tighten or release the element 4- in its engagement with the stay or holder 3. In the embodiment illustrated in Fig. 3 the opposite end of the element l: is embedded within the blinder, which prevents twisting or turning of the element l after it has been engaged in its proper adjustment. The provision of a releasable connection, such as the element -'lpermits the stay or holder 3 to be withdrawn from the clamp element el', and thereby disengaged from the blinder without breaking any of the parts should the blinder be caught on any rigid object when the bridle is in use on the horse. in this connection, it is a well known fact that the stays or holders, or the blinders themselves, are frequently broken or torn, or otherwise seriously damaged, while in use by becoming engaged or caught upon rigid objects so that when the horse moves the stay or holder is broken, or the blinder is torn or damaged. The provision of this releasable connection eliminates this objection.
in Figs. 4;, 5 and (S I have illustrated a modified structure, in which the blinder 7 is formed with a space 8 between its inner and outer members. A metallic plate 9 is attached to one of the members within the space 8. In this construction the stay or holder 10 is provided with a flat portion 11 on its lower end, which is adapted to be inserted within the space 8 along side of the metallic plate 9, as illustrated. A bolt 12 passes through the blinder and through the metallic plate 9, and is received within a notch 13 in the lower extremity of the flat portion 11. A clamp nut 14; on the outer extremity of the bolt 12 is operative to clamp the parts together and bind the lower end of the stay or holder in engagement with the blinder. In this construction it is readily apparent that the connection between the stay or holder and the blinder releasable or separable under the conditions described in connection with the separation of the stay or holder 3 from the blinder 1.
From the foregoing it is apparent that in event of detachment or separation of the stay or holder from the blinder, the parts may be readily reengagcd without renewing or substituting additional parts.
I do not restrict myself to specific features, for it is understood that there may be variations from the construction and arrangement described without departure from the spirit and scope of the invention, but
hat I claim and desire to secure by ters Patent of the United States is:
1. The combination with a blinder, of a holder extending against one side of said blinder, a clamp device engaging said holder and having one end embedded in the blinder and the opposite end projecting through the blinder, and means for tightening and releasing said clamp device.
2. The combination with a blinder, and a holder for said blinder, of a clamp device extending through the biinder and engaging said holder, and means on said clamp device at one side of said blinder for tightening said clamp device.
3. The combination with a blinder, and a holder for said blinder, of a clamp device encircling the holder and extending through said blinder, and a nut upon said clamp device adjustable to tighten or to release said clamp device. 7
4. The combination with a blinder, and a holder extending along side of said blinder, of a clamp device embracing said holder and extending through said blinder on one side of said holder and contacting with said blinder on the other side of said holder, and releasable means for holding said clamp device clainped upon said stay or holder.
In witness whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
