L-cLAsP.
To all L/)/l0m it m (2 1 concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH Lnrrsonun, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencil-Clasps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art. to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has for its object. to provide a novel pencil clasp adapted to permit the pencil to be secured against accidental removal from the pocket. and which furthermore, permits the mounting on the pencil of miniature photographs, calendars or other desirable matter, and consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and particularly claimed.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating a suitable embodiment of the invention: Figure -1 is a view in elevation of a pencil equipped with a clasp embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same on the line 2 9 of Fig. Fig. -3- is a view in elevation taken from a diametrically opposite point to that shown in Fig. -1. Figs. 4 and. 5- are views in elevation of modified forms of construction. Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view on the line G6 of Fig. -5-.
The particular object of my invention is to provide a device for use on pencils, penholders. fountain pens and the like, whereby miniature photographs, small calendars, or any other desirable similar matter may be displayed on the same.
In its preferred embodiment the invention comprises a split sleeve 1 made of an elastic sheet metal -which is adapted to rcceive the pencil or similar device 2, and be frictionally held in place thereon in the usual and well-known manner. sleeve 1 is provided at one end with a projection 3 equipped at its free end with a Specification of Letters Patent.

spherical point 4 between which and the body of the pencil the wall of a pocket is adapted to be received and engaged.
My invention resides more particularly in the member 5 comprising what may be termed an elastic split cylindrical sheet metal frame which is adapted to receive the sleeve 1 or the pencil 2 and yieldingly engage the same whereby it will be held in place thereon. The said member 5 is of skeleton form, that is to say, the middle portion thereof is entirely cut away between the sides and ends thereof to provide a large opening 6. The portions of said member bordering the opening are oitset relatively to the outermost edge portion so as to form flanges 7 and 8 disposed inwardly of the edge portions of said member which are some distance removed from the cylindrical plane of said edge portion. Between said flanges 7 and 8 and the surface of the sleeve 1 or pencil 9- a plurality of thin sheets 9 and 10 are adapted to be received, the former thereof consisting of a miniature photolatter preferably of a transparent celluloid or similar elastic transparent material which is adapted to cover the sheet 9. The said member 5 may be used as an adjunct to the clasp 1 with its projection 3 and spherical point 4, or to any similar sleeve adapted to receive the pencil 2, such for example, as removable point-protecting sleeves, and the like, or the same may be mounted directly upon the pencil, as shown in Fig.- '1.
The construction may be further modified as shown in Fig. 5 in which the member 5 is equipped at one end with a projection- 11 similar to the projection 3 and which is equipped with the spherical point 12 correspondin to the point 4. In order that said member 0 may more completely surround the pencil 2 the same may be provided on its :opposed edges with projections 13.
Tl're device is simple, cheap, ornamental and useful in that it enables matter intended for readygeference to be displayed on the pencil, or the like.
