Improvement in Gigarette-Rod-Sealing Devices, of which the following is aspecificat-ion. I This invention relatesto a cigarette rod sealing device particularly 'designed for high speed cigarette machines of the conand in'whichthe edges of the wrapperpaper are over-lapped and pasted.
It is well known in the art that in the. old machines of the continuous rod type, there was more or .less slip of therod in'the-rod forming tube. This slip was due to vari ous causes among which may be mentioned:
imperfect feeding whereby the quantity'of tobacco within the rod varied; changing atmospheric conditions which produced avariation in the condition of the tobacco" within the rod due to its aflinityfor mois-' ture; inaccurate adjustment ofthe rod forming' t be itself; and to other. causes not necessary to be mentioned herein.
Machine's have been heretofore in which belts or equivalent devices contacting and running with the seams of cigarette rods were relied upon to seal the pasted seams, and in-certain of these machinesprovision was made for moving the belt or device out of contact with the'seam for inspection or other purposes. In none of such machines, however, was any :provision made for varying the speed of the belt or device with respect to the speed of the cigarette rod.
It has been found in practice that in'the high speed cigarette machines'of the type in which the present invention is employed,
the slip is greater than in the old relatively slow speed machines. Moreover, in high speed machines, thecigarette rod is traveling within the rod formingtube for only one-half of the time that it was in' the old machines. This tends to cause the rod to open up after it leaves the tube for the reason thatthe paste does not have time to set while the rod is within the rod forming 'tube.
The main object. of the present invention is the production of a device adapted for use in high speed cigarette machines and which will overcome the defect inherent in disclosed the old machines, properly seal the cigarette rod after it leaves the cigarette rod forming tube.
A further ob 'ect is the production of a device of the general character above outlined and which includes a movable member traveling with the cigarette rod to exert pressure upon the seam of'the same with.-
out setting up friction as was the case in .the forming tubes of the old machines.
A further object is the production .of a
sealing device having a member traveling with the cigarette rod for sealing the same and provided with means whereby its speed may be varied in accordance with the speed of the cigarette rod due to atmospheric changes or other causes.
WVith these and other objects not specifically mentioned in view, the invention consists in certain constructions and combinations which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically set forth in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification and in which like characters of reference indicate the same or like parts, Figure lfis a plan view vof a device constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 is a front elevationof the device shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the structure shown in Fig. 1 the view being taken from the right of said figureyand Figs. 4, 5 and Gare respectively sectional views taken on the lines 4, 4, 5, 5 and 6, 6 in Fig. 1.
In carrying the invention into eifectthere is provided a cigarette rod forming mechanism adapted to move the rod longitudinally during and after its formation, a seaming or pasting device, and a sealing device ineluding operating connections and a member traveling with the cigarette rod and exerting pressure upon the seam thereof. In the best construct ons there is also provided means for varying the relative speeds of the cigarette rod and sealing device. All of these mechanisms and'devices may vary in construction within wide limits. The device selected to illustrate the invention is to be understood as being one of I many possible constructions within the in-.
vention.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates the bed of a cigarette machine of the high speed type. Mounted upon the bed 1 is a bracket 'clearness. "For the purpose of sealingthe wrapping 2 which serves to support a rod forming mechanism generally indicated by. the character 3. The particular details of construction of this rod forming mechanism lie wholly beyond the range of the present invention and is unnecessary to a full understanding thereof. A detailed description of the rod forming mechanism is thereforev of tobacco. This seaming device is indicated by the broken lines at 4 which show dia-. grammatically the paste applying wheel of .a seaming or pastin device well known in" I the art. 1 The particu or construction of this seaming device lies beyond the range of the present invention and'is unnecessary to a full understanding thereof, and a detailed description andillustration thereof is there fore omitted in the interest of brevity and paper after paste has been applied thereto, or the wrapping paper has been otherwise seamed, there is provided a sealing device including a belt 5 which over-rides the seam of the rod as it is advanced from the rod forming mechanism and under-rides a bar 6 suitably supported upon a bracket 7 screwed or otherwise fastened to the, main bracket 8 of the sealing device. The belt 5 over-runs pulleys 9 and 10. Thepulley 10 is secured to a short shaft 11 journaled in a bearing 12 formed in the main bracket 8 before referred to. The pulley 10 is held upon the shaft by means of a nut 13 which cooperates with a co1lar'14 at the o posite end of the shaft to revent longitudinal displacement of the shaft 11 in a well-known manner. The pulley 9 is fast upon a shaft 15, which shaft is journaled in bearings .16 and 17 formed in the bracket 8. The pulley 9 is held uponthe shaft15 by means of a nut 18 which coiiperates in'a well-known manner with a collar 19 pinned to the opposite end of the shaft to prevent longitudinal displacement of said shaft. Overriding the up per run of the belt 5 is a tightening pulley 20. This pulleyis journaled upon a stud 21 carried upon one end of a ,two- arir'ied lever 22, 23, This lever is fulcrum'ed upon a stud 24 which is fixed in the boss 25 upstanding upon the bracket 8 before ra er-red to. The arm 23 is provided with athumbscrevv 26, the lower end of which contacts with the main bracket 8. It will be readil waded stood that manipulation of the www 25 will result in slacking or tightening the belt as desired.

It will be readily understood that the speed of the'belt may be varied by operation of the screw 31Iwhich, through the medium of the fork 29-, produces a movement of the driven wheel 28 toward or: away from the axis of rotation of the driving wheel 36. It
will be readily understood also that the pivotal mounting of the main bracket 8 of the device upon the sleeves 38 and 39 carried by the hubs 45 and 46 of the standard 48 provides means whereby the belt and its operating connections may be moved away from the cigarette rod to expose the same. for inspection. For the purpose of limiting the pressure of the belt 5 upon the cigarette rod and for the further purpose of providinga stop limiting thereturn movement of the sealing device after inspection, the device is provided with a screw50 which is threaded through a boss 51 formed on the main bracket 8 of the device. This screw is provided with a knurled head 52 and with an elongated lock nut 53. The lower end of the screw5O contacts with a ledge 54 formed on the standard 47 before referred to. By an inspection of Fig. 6, it will be readily understood that the screw50 operates to limit-the rod and of the belt 5 may be varied at will during the operation of the device-to accommodate a thicker or thinner cigarette rod.

and a sealing device comprising a belt traveling with the cigarette rod and exerting pressure upon the seam of the rod and. a variable speed frictional driving mechanism operative while the machine is in operation to cause the rod forming mechanism and the sealing device to operate at substantially the same speed said sealing device being movable from its operative position to expose the cigarette rod for inspection.
12. Thecombination'with a cigarette-rod forming mechanism, of a seammg device, and a sealing device comprising a belt traveling with the cigarette rod and exerting pressure upon the seam of the rod and a variable speed frictional driving mechanism operative while the machine is in operation to cause the rod forming mechanism and the sealing device to operate at substantially the same speed and a support to which the sealing device is pivoted, said pivotal connection permitting a movement of the belt from its operative position to expose the cigarette rod for inspection.
13. In a cigarette rod sealing device, the combination with a air of pulleys, of a belt, the operating run of the belt being adapted to travel with a seamed cigarette rod, a s haft driving one of the pulleys, a driven frictional wheel slidable upon and rotatable with said shaft, a driving frictional Wheel contacting with the driven Wheel, a second shaft supporting the driving wheel, means for-rotating said' second shaft, means for shifting the driven wheel along its shaft, and a bracket supporting the belt and driven wheel with its shaft, said bracket being driven frictional wheel slidable upon androtatable with said shaft, a driving fric-.
