To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, Ennnnon D. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful improvement in Pasting Mechanismfor Cigarette-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
.lLl'HS invention relates to an improvement pasting mechanisms for cigarette niachines, particularly for high speed machines oi the continuous rod type.
in the operation of high speed cigarette machines or the continuous rod type, it has been found that more or less frequent adjustment of the pasting mechanism with respect to the cigarette rod forming mechanism is necessary. This is partly due to variations in the paper forming the wrapper of the cigarette rod, partly to the condition or the tobacco of which the cigarette filler is formed, which varies with varying atmospheric conditions, and partly to variations in the tobacco feed whether manually or automatically effected. Heretotore, in the operation of such machines, it has been necessary to stop the machines in order to make the necessary adjustment. sults in loss of time and decrease in the production of cigarettes by the machine.
The present invention has for one of its objects the production of a pasting mechanism which may be adjusted with respect to the cigarette rod forming mechanism while the machine as a whole is in operation, thus avoiding the necessity for stopping the machine and the consequent decrease in production of cigarettes by the machine.
A further object is the production of a device or the character mentioned' which may readily be thrown in and out of operative position. to enable the operator to efiec't a saving of time and a consequent increase in the production ct cigarettes by the machine whenever it is necessary to lead the wrapper paper through the cigarette rod forming: mechanism, as for instance when the machine is started, and whenever the aper breaks or tears, as it sometimes does.
With these and other objects not specifically mentioned in view, the invent-ion consists in certain constructions, combinations, improvements and parts which will be hereinaiiter fully described and then specifically set forth in the claims hereunto appended.
This reln the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification and in which like characters of reference indicate the same or like parts, Figure 1 is a plan View, partly broken. away, of a device constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 1s a cross-sectional view not taken on a straight line across Fig. 1, but taken on a broken line to clearly bring out the structure of the driving mechanism for the device illustrated in Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a front elevation of a part of the device shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the cigarette rod forming mechanism being omitted in the interest of clearness.
in carrying the invention into efi'ect, there is provided a cigarette rod forming mechanism which may be of any of the types well known in the art, and since the particular construction of such mechanisms is not necessary to a full understanding of the present invention, only a fragmentary portion of a cigarette rod forming mechanism is shown in the drawings. The cigarette rod forming mechanism, however, will in any case include a channeled plate marked 1, through which'the cigarette rod 2 passes. As shown, the plate 1 is supported by a bracket 3 suitably supported upon the bed 4: of a cigarette machine. in all the machines of the continuous rod type knownin the art, the paper Wrapper for the cigarette, as it passes the pasting mechanism, has one side upstanding as at 5 and to which the paste is applie For the purpose of enabling an operator to lead the cigarette wrapper through the rod forming mechanism, there is provided a posting mechanism which may be readily and quickly swung out of operative position with respect to the cigarette rod forming mechanism to clear the same of obstructions, and the particular mounting of this pasting mechanism may be varied within wide limits. The driving means for the pasting mechanism may also be varied Within wide limits.
in the device selected to illustrate the invention, there is provided a vertical rotating shaft 6 suitably yournaled in a bush fixed in a hlockB countersunk in the bed 4: of the cigarette machine. This rotating shaft, when used, may derive its motion from any suitable source of motion. As shown, its lower end is provided with a pinion 9 in mesh with a gear 10, which gear ldli mechanism, and it is is formed integral with a worm wheel 11. The gear and worm wheel 11 are journaled upon a post 12 stationarily mounted in a bush 13' secured to the lower part of the bed 4 before referred to. The worm wheel 11 is in mesh with a worm 14 which is fixed upon a shaft 15. The shaft 15 is or may be one of the main power shafts of the cigarette machine in connection with which the device is used. There is further provided a bracket 16 swingably mounted upon the upper end of the vertical shaft 6 before refered to. This bracket is provided with an integral plate 17 to which a paste pot 18, of well-known construction, is secured by means of thumb screws 1919. The paste pot is provided with a feed wheel 20 and with a doctor 21 of well-known construction and which may be readily adjusted with respect to the feed wheel 20 by means of an adjusting screw 22. The asting mecha nism is further provided with a paste applying wheel or disk 23 which contacts with the feed wheel 20 and takes paste therefrom and transfers it to the upstanding part of the paper wrapper for the cigarette rod at 5. This paste applying wheel 23 is fixed upon a shaft 24 mounted in cone bearin s 25-26. The lower bearing 25 is fixed, but the upper bearing 26 is ad ustable by means of a screw 27 and thumb lock nut 28. The
which is not shown. The. feed wheel 20 is in bearings formed in the bracket 16 before referred to. One end of the shaft 35 carries a bevel gear 36 which is in mesh with a bevel gear 37 fast upon the upper end of the vertical rotating shaft 6 before referred to. It will be readily understood that the rotating shaft 6, the pulley 33 and. the belt 34 constitute drivin means for the pasting to be understood that in certain constructions within the invention, difierent driving mechanisms may be employed.
Means are provided for adjusting the pasting mechanism with respect to the cigarette rod forming mechanism, and this means may vary in construction within wide limits. In the best constructions provision is made to adjust the pasting mechanism in two directions; that is, toward or away from the upstanding wrapper paper and along said paper toward or away from the edge thereof.
In the device selected to illustrate the invention, a vertical adjustment of the pastbelt 34 which derives lts motion from any suitable moving part screw 38 threaded in a bush or sleeve 39 fast in the bed 4 before referred to. This screw carries at its upper end a collar 40, which collar is secured to the screw by means of a pin 41. The collar contacts with the under side of the pinion 9 before referred to, and forms a bearing for the lower end ,of the rotating shaft 6. The lower end of the screw 38 is provided with an operating disk 42 which is' secured to the screw by means of a pin 43. There is also provided a lock nut 44 for holding the screw in adjusted position. It will be noted that the face of the gear 10 is somewhat wider than the face of the pinion 9. is to provide for intermeshing of the two when the vertical shaft 6 is moved longitudinally to ad just the pasting mechanism vertically with respect to the cigarette rod forming mechanism. It is well known that in cigarette machines of the type to which the present invention is applicable, the cigarette rod forming mechanism occupies a position along the front of the machine. By reference to Fig. 2, it will be readily seen that the adjusting screw 38 is close to the front of the machine where it can be readily reached by the operator, and it will be readily understood that the screw may be operated and the vertical position of the pasting mechanism varied without stopping the machine. For the purpose of horizontally adjusting the paste applying wheel 33, and -in fact the pasting mechanism as a whole, there is provided a limiting-screw 45 projecting through the bracket 3 before referred to. This screw contacts with an arm 46, which arm is mounted upon a stud 47 fixed in the bracket 16 before referred to.
It will be readily understood that by manipulating the screw 45, the horizontal position of the paste applying wheel 23 with respect to the upstanding side of the cigarette rod wrapper and with respect to the cigarette rod forming mechanism as a whole, may be varied without stopping the machine.-
For the purpose of retaining the pasting mechanism in operative position when adjusted, there is provided locking means operative irrespective of the adjusted position of the pasting mechanism, and this means may vary in construction within wide limits. As shown, there is provided a shaft- 48 suitably journaled in a bearing 49 formed on a bracket 50, which bracket is screwed or otherwise fastened to the bed 4 before referrcd to. One end of this shaft 48 is provided with an eccentric 51 which overlies and contacts with the arm 46 before referred to. The opposite end of the shaft 48 is proteasers vided with a handle 52 by means of which the eccentric is operated. The arm 46 is so shaped that the eccentric 51 may be thrown down to lock the arm at any adjusted position when the past-ing mechanism is in operative position.
It is to be understood that although the means just described for adjusting the pasting mechanism is a convenient and efifectivemeans for effecting the desired purpose, other mechanisms may be employed for this purpose if desired.
It is apparent that changes and variations may, be made in the structure by means of which the invention is carried into effect. The invention, therefore, is not to be restricted to the precise details of the structure' shown and described.
