ADJUSTABLE CQNNEGTION FOR GRMENTS AND THE LIKE.
Specification pf Letters Patent.
.application filed January 29, 1913. Serial No. 744,976.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, HARRY C. HAZARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented or discovered certain new and use-l ful Improvements in Adjustable Connec-v tions for Garments and the like, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
rlIhis invention has for its object to prov ide an adjustable connection by means of which a flexible strip, such as a piece of tape, and the opposite ends of which are attached to an article or garment, may be shortened or lengthened for the purpose of taking up or letting out the article or garment to which it may be secured.
To this end the improved adjust-abley connection comprises, in cooperation with a flexible strip the opposite ends of which are secured, by stitching or otherwise, to a garment or other article, two buckles, one of which is attached at one edge to the article or garment, and which may be referred to as the fixed buckle, and the other of which is loosely mounted on the strip and which may therefore be referred to as the i loose buckle. Each of these buckles is preferably constructed with two slots providing two outer bars and a central bar for each buckle. article or garment at one edge and preferably at a point coincident with the point of attachment-of one end of the strip; the latter passing beneath the central bar and the bar at the free edge of the buckle. From the said free edgeof the said fixed buckle the strip runs to the loose buckle and through both slot-s and over the central bar of the said loose buckle, and thence to the fixed buckle and upward through the slot near the free edge of the said fixed buckle and around the bar at said free edge of said fixed buckle and then back through both slots and over the central bar of said loose buckle to its point of. attachmentto the article or garment at some distance from the point' of attachment above referred to. Thus one bight of the strip will pass around the free bar of the fixed buckle and two bights or plies of the strip, one overlying the other, will pass over the central bar of the loose buckle. From the manner Just described of running or threading the strip through the slots of the buckle it re- The fixed buckle is secured to they sii-lts that the loose buckle may be located at yany desired distance from the fixed buckle, or may be moved from or toward said fixed buckle, for the purpose of shortening or lengthening the working length of said strip, and thus taking up or letting out the article or garment to which said strip is secured; and when tension is placed on said strip, at any desired adjustment of said loose buckle, the strip will be, tightly gripped or held therein, owin to the binding of the bights or plies o the strip in said loose buckle. In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 illustrates a portion of a garment with the improved adjustable connection applied thereto, and Fig. 2 is a somewhat diagrammatic sectional View to illustrate the manner in which the strip runs through the slots of the buckles.
Referring to the drawing, 12 denotes a portion of a garment, which may be the waist-band of a air of drawers or the like,
and 18 is, a flexible strip of tape or other suitable material, said strip being secured to the garment, preferably by stitching, at the points 14.- and 15. Also attached to the garment and preferably at the point 15 is the xed buckle 16, said buckle preferably having two slots 17 and 18 affording an attached side bar 19 at one edge, a free side bar 20 at its opposite edge, and a central bar 21.
Mounted on the strip 13 is a loose buckle 22 having two slots 23 and 24 providing side bars 25 and 26 and a central bar 27. The strip 13 runs from its point of attachment 15 to the garment beneath the central bar 21 and the free side bar 20 of the fixed buckle 1G,\then to and through the slot 23 and over the central bar 27 of the loose buckle 22,
thence back to the fixed buckle 16 and upward through the slot 18 and around the free side bar 2O of said fixed buckle and thence through both slots of the loose buckle 22 and beneath both side bars and over` the central bar of said loose buckle, thus forming a bight which overlies the bight first formed around said central bar 27. In other words the said strip 13 is so disposed in the said loose buckle that two plies thereof pass through the slot 24C thereof nearest to the fixed buckle and under the side bar 26 nearest said fixed buckle, so that when tension is placed on said strip the latter Will be gripped at said side bar and also at the central bar 27 of said loose buckle.
ward, thus shortening gripped in the loose buckle, as above described, to prevent the strip from slipping.
To lengthen the adjustable connection, for the purpose of letting out the connected parts of the article or garment, by shortening or letting out the loops of the strip between the buckles, the' strip is slackened and 4the bight thereof passing through the slot 18 of the fixed buckle is drawn upward or outthe underlying loop of the strip and forming a loose upper loop which readily reeves through the loose buckle until the bi ht of said loop is tightcned against the ree bar 20ct the fixed buckle, when tension will be placed on the stri and the latter will be gripped and held in tllie loose buckle as before.
rIhe invention is adapted for many uses, as on the waist-bands of drawers and trousers, the backs o' vests, or on belts, and it may alsobe employed as an adjustable the latter will beA holder for the sleeves of shirts and other garments or as a skirt adjustment, as also for other purposes, as will be understood.
Having thus described my invent-ion claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent: An adjustable connection for garments and the like, consisting of a flexible strip permanently attached at or near its op osite ends to. the garment or article, com ined `with a fixed buckle attached at one edge .to
the garment or article and having near 1ts other or free edge a slot through which a bight. of said strip runs, and a loose buckle mounted on said strip and having two slots forming a central bar and two side bars, said strip bein so disposed that two bights or plies thereo overlie said central bar and the upper ply passes beneath both of said side bars, and also so that two plies thereof pass through the slot\of said loose buckle nearest said xed buckle and underlie that one of said side bars of said loose buckle nearest said fixed buckle.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HARRY o. HAZARD.
