FULL-STROKE MECHANISM.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY KtiN'rzLnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kingston, Luzerne county, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Full-Stroke Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to full-stroke mechanism for registering machines and is adapted in particular for such of these machines as are operated either manually or by power. Its principal object is to maintain the full-stroke mechanism in operative condition when the machine is manually operated and automatically to disconnect it when the machine is to be power driven. In the latter instance the full-stroke mechanism is not only needless, but it is also a hindrance to high operative speeds otherwise attainable by a power drive; as the usual spring-actuated locking dog coacting with the notched sector cannot change its position quickly enough at the end of the working stroke to function properly.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts the essential elements of which are set forth in the appended claims and in the preferred form of embodiment disclosed in the accompanying drawings and description. The embodiment is shown in connection with a calculating machine, the latter being a typical example of a registering machine to which the improvement may be applied.
The particular machine selected to illustrate the operation of the invent-ion is the Wales adding machine as shown and de scribed in Letters Patent Nos. 880,157 of February 25, 1908, and 937,249, of October 19, 1909.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the full-stroke mechanism with the frame of the machine broken away to show the parts; Fig. 2 is a sectional front elevation taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Figs. 3 and 4 are front elevations with parts in section or broken away and Fig. 5 is an elevation of the hub of a detachable handle.
As seen in Figs. 1 and 2, 10 represents the frame of the machine. Loosely mounted in the frame is a rotatable sleeve 11 to a flange of which is fastened by means of rivets 13 the full-stroke sector 12. The sleeve 11 forms a bearing for the operating shaft 1 1, to which is attached by means of pins the Specification of Letters Patent.

As best shown in Fig. 3, the full-stroke sector has attached to it by means of bracket 24 and pin 22 an L-shaped lever 23 which is pivoted to the sector at 22. The lower arm of this lever is equipped with a double looking head adapted, as shown in Fig. 2, to enter a keeper 21 cut in the arcuate piece 20 of member 15, and also a keeper 26 cut in the side frame 10. The full-stroke sector is slotted as shown at 29 in Fig. 1 to permit free movement of the lever 23.
A collar 30 is rigidly mounted on sleeve 11 and is provided with a lug 32 in which is located a spring-pressed plunger 25 which bears against and normally forces the nose 34 of the lever 23 into the opening formed by the bore of the sleeve 11. On the flange of the sleeve a projection 27 is formed, as shown in Fig. 1, which is adapted to engage the lug 28 on member 15.
The handle shown in Fig. 5 is provided with a stub end 35 surrounded by a spaced sleeve 36 which telescopes the extremity of sleeve 11 when the handle is applied to the machine. The collar 30 is provided with the usual lug 31 and ratchet dog 33, by means of which the handle may be locked to the sleeve 11.
In operation, if the handle be applied to the machine, the stub end 35 after entering the sleeve 11 will force back the nose 34 of lever 23. This will move the locking head of the lower arm to the left as shown in Fig. at and cause it to enter the keeper 21, thereby locking together the sleeve 11 and member 15 including also the full-stroke sector. The power applied to the handle is transmitted through sleeve 11, projection 27 to the lug 28 on member 15, causing direct movement of the latter by means of the handle. Under these conditions the full-stroke mechanism is in an operative condition.
WVhen the machine is to. be driven by its power attachment and the handle is removed, the plunger 25 forces the nose of lever 23 upward thereby moving the locking head on lever 23 to the right as shown in Fig. 3. This movement disengages the full-stroke sector and sleeve 11 from the member 15 and at the same time locks them in a fixed position by means of the locking head engaging the keeper 26 in the side frame 10. The member 15, however, is free to be actuated by the rack 18, the lug 28-mcving downward away from projection 27 which is now locked to the frame through the means described above.
The arcuate piece 20 attached to member 15. forms a guard which prevents any engagement with lever 23 except at the point where the keeper 21 is located.
What I claim is:
1. A full-stroke mechanism including an oscillating sector in combination with means to disable the said sector from movement at will.
2. A full-stroke mechanism including a shaft, an oscillating sector and a detachable handle to operate the same, in combination with means to disable the said sector from movement by detaching the handle.
3. A frame, a full-stroke mechanism including a shaft, an oscillating sector and a detachable handle to operate the same, in combination with means to disable the said sector and to lock it to the frame by detaching the handle.
4:. A frame, a full-stroke mechanism including a shaft, an oscillating sector and a detachable handle to operate the same, and
, means adapted to lock' said sector to said frame upon detachment of the handle.
5. A full-stroke mechanism including an oscillating sector, an adjacent member adapted to be oscillated in unison therewith, and means to interlock the said sector and adjacent member.
6. A full-stroke mechanism, a shaft, detachable operating means, and means adapted to disable the entire full-stroke mechanism relatively to said shaft upon removal of said operating means.
7 A full-stroke mechanism including. a sector, a shaft, adetachable handle adapted to actuate the sector and the shaft, and means adapted to disable the said sector relatively to the said shaft upon removal of the said handle.
S. The combination of a shaft,alternative means to drive the said shaft by handor by power, full-stroke mechanismin association therewith, and means whereby the entire full-stroke mechanism is disabled when the hand driving means is disconnected.
9. The combination of 'a shaft, alternative means to drive the said shaft by hand or. by power, full-stroke mechanism inassociation therewith including a sector, and means whereby the said sector is held in operative position when the shaft is driven by hand and is disabled when the hand driving means is disconnected.
1.0. A registering device including manual operating. means, alternative power operat ing means, full-stroke mechanism, and means whereby the entire full-stroke mechanism is disabled whenever the said device is put mto condition for power operatlon.
11. A registering device including manual operating means, alternative power operating means, a full-stroke sector and locking pawl, and means whereby the said sector is disabled whenever the said registering device is put into condition for power operation.
12. A registering device including a detachable handle for its manual operation, alternative power operating means, fullstroke mechanism, and means whereby the entire full-stroke mechanism is disabled from movement whenthe sald handle is de- Ltached from the sa1d registering device.
13. A registering det ice including a detachable handle for its manual operation,
alternative power operating means, a fullstroke sector and locking pawl, and means whereby the said sector is disabled from movement whenever the said handle is. detached from the said registering device.
14:. In an adding machine, an operative shaft, full-stroke mechanism in association therewith, manual means to actuate said shaft, alternative power means to actuate said shaft, and means adapted to disable the entire full-stroke; mechanism from movement whenever the said manual meansis disabled.
15. In an adding machine, an operative shaft, full-stroke mechanism in association therewith and including a sector, manual means to actuate said shaft, alternative power means to actuate said shaft, and means to disable the said sector from movement whenever the said manual means is disabled.
16; In an adding machine, an operative shaft, full-stroke mechanism in association therewith, manual actuating means including a detachable handle, alternative power actuating means, and means'to disable the entire full stroke' mechanism from move ment when said handle is detached;

manual actuating means including a detachable handle, alternative power actuating means, and means to disable the said sector and lock it to the frame when said handle is detached.
19. In an adding machine, the combination with a full-stroke sector, a locking lever attached thereto, and means adapted to actuate said lever to cause said sector to be locked either in or out of operative position.
20. In an adding machine, the combination of a shaft, a full-stroke sector, a locking lever attached to the sector, a detachable handle, said lever being controlled in its locking movements by the attaching and detaching of the said handle.
21. The combination of the sector 12, the locking lever 23 carried thereby, the movable keeper 21 and the opposed fixed keeper 26, substantially as shown and described.
22. A frame, a full-stroke mechanism including a shaft, a detachable handle, and an oscillating sector movable with the shaft, in combination with means to disable the fullstroke mechanism and to lock a part of the same to the frame.
