' provements in Stove-Tops, of which the fol lowing is a specification.

This invention relates to stove tops and consists in certain improvements in the con struction thereof as will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.

The invention is more particularly directed to stove tops formed of cast material and particularly malleable castings. here this material is used the shrinkage is so irregular that stove tops cannot be made with the desired accuracy without forming the top in different parts and machining these parts so as to correct the irregularities incident to variations in shrinkage. In form ing stove tops, the opening for the stove pipe in the rear part of the top is ordinarily located at the center of said part and in order to bring this opening to such center part, it is necessary to machine or out both ends of the rear part or supply a separate part carrying the stove pipe opening which may be adjusted. Another feature contemplated in this construction is the flanged edge of the top. These tops are provided with a flange along the outer edge, the purpose of the flange being to finish the top and to strengthen the exposed edge.-

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings as follows Figure 1 shows a plan view of the assembled top. Fig. 2 a section on the line 22 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 a section on the line 3-3 in Fig. 1. Fig. 1 a section on the line t-4 in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 a section on the line 55 in Fig. 1.

. 1 marksthe front part of the stove top, 2 the rear part, 3 the stove pipe opening and 4 the sides. In this construction these are ordinarily formed in four different parts.

The front part is brought to length by machining or shearing either one or both ends 5. These ends are plain. The side parts 1 are provided with the lips 6 which extend under the part 1 and are secured thereto by rivets 7, the lips forming shoulders 8 along the sides of the side parts against which the ends 5 abut.

The rear part 2 has each end formed in two lines 99 and 9-10, the line 91O abutting the side of the side parts at and the line 9 9 being at an angle forming a mitered joint with the side part. The side parts have the ends on the lines 11-11 abutting and making joints with the mitered portions 9-9 of the ends of the rear part. It will be readily observed that the rear part 2 may be machined or sheared or punched so as to cut the ends along the lines 99 and 9-40 so as to make the rear part 2 of a given length and with its ends at equal distances from the pipe opening 3. It will be observed also that the ends of the side parts t--4t along the lines 1111 may be cut or machined so as to give to the sides l4 uniform lengths.

The side parts 4-4t are provided with the lips 12 which extend from the sides of the side parts 4% adjacent to the ends. These lips extend. under the part 2 and are secured to the rear part by the rivets 13, the lips forming shoulders 1 1 along the edges of the side parts 1 against which the portions 910 of the ends of the rear part 2 abut. I

It will be observed that while the lips 12 extend from the side parts 4- thcy do not extend from the ends of said side parts and therefore the ends are unobstructed so as to permit the shearing or punching of the ends to cut the ends to give the proper lengths to the side parts 1. It will be understood that all of these parts are ordinarily cast too long so that their minimum lengths are at least as long as desired. Under ordinary circumstances practically all of such pieces are slightly longer than desired and therefore need machining or cutting to bring them to length. The ends along the line 1111 of the side parts l, therefore, before machined or sheared extend slightly beyond the lips 12 for this purpose. In this way a symmetrical construction can be formed of four parts and the pipe opening 3 assured a central location in the rear part. At the same time, the flange around the outer edge extends continuously along that edge, said flange being provided on the outer edges of the side parts, at the rear edge of the rear part and at the front edge of the front part.

\Vhat I claim as new is 1. In a stove top, the combination of a side part having an unobstructed Initered end; a lip extending from its side adjacent to the end; a rear part having a portion of its end mitered, and a portion extending along the side of the side part and over the lip; and means for securing the lip to the rear part.

2. In a stove top, the combination of two parts flanged along the outer edge and j oining at a corner, each having an abutting mitered end, said ends being unobstructed to permit of cutting said parts to length, and one of said parts having a lip extending under the companion part for securing the parts together,

In a stove top, the combination of a flanged rear part having a centrally located pipe opening, said rear part having unobstructed ends, portions of which are mitered and portions of which ends are at right angles to the rear edge of the rear part, said side parts having unobstructed mitered ends abutting the mitered portions of the ends of the rear part; lips extending from the sides of the side parts adjacent to the ends of the side parts and extending under the rear part, the portions of the ends of the rear parts which extend at right angles to the rear edge thereof abutting against the sides of the side parts, said side parts having flanges along their outer edges and across their front ends; and a front part secured to said side parts.

4. In a stove top, the combination of a flanged rear part having a centrally located pipe opening, said rear part having unobstructed ends, portions of which are mitered and portions of which ends are at right angles to the rear edge of the rear part, said side parts having unobstructed mitered ends abutting the mitered portions of the ends of the rear part; lips extending from the sides of the side parts adjacent to the ends of the side parts and extending under the rear part, the portions of the ends of the rear parts which extend at right angles to the rear edge thereof abutting against the sides of the side parts; lips extending inwardly adjacent to the front ends of the side parts; and a front part having unobstructed ends abutting the sides of the side parts and eX- tending over the lips adjacent to the front ends of said side parts.
