PATENT OFFICE.
NATIONAL MALLEABLE CASTINGS A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
COMPANY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO,
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 754,146, datedMarcli 8v, 1904.
Application filed August 1, 19,03. Serial No. 167,876. (No model.) y
To a/ZZ whom t may con/cern,.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. KNEALE, of Indianapolis, in the county of Marion, Indiana, have invented a new and useful Stove- Top, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l shows in plan view a stove-top 1o constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional detail view on the line II II of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a plan view showing a modification.
The object of my invention is to provide a I I 5 stove-top made of assembled pieces in such manner that the front strip of the stove-top, and preferably the front strip and back strip, can be machined or milled to bring them to a proper length, and thus to compensate for unequal dimensions of these parts produced in casting and enable'the parts of the stove to be assembled accurately and a cheap and serviceable construction produced.
To this end my invention consists in a stovetop the end or ends whereof, by which I mean the front or back portions of the top, are formed of strips adapted to abut against the side strips of the stove and are adapted to be ground or milled, and thus brought to the proper length.-
My invention may be embodied in several modifications, some of which I show in the drawings.
In Figs. 1 and 2, 2 and 3 are the end strips 3 5 of the stove, and 4 and 5 are the side strips. The front ends of the side strips 4: 5 are finishedthat is to say, they are provided with flanged and rounded front ends and with integral lugs 6 6, by which they are secured to 40 the end strip 3, which extends between them and is plain at the ends, so that it may be cut or milled to the proper length to fit accurately. The rear end piece 2 is made up of three sections-two outer sections c and an inner section ci', which has fastening-lugs at its ends and has a hole for a stovepipe. The sections b c are finished at their outer ends and are provided with integral lugs for attachment to the side sections I 5 and at their inner ends are plain, so that they may be cut or milled to lit the middle section d and to constitute therewith a strip of the proper length. The rear ends of the strips 4 and 5 may be cut or milled in the manner above described.
In the modification shown in Fig. 3 the front 55 end strip 3 and the side strips 4' and 5 are constructed as above described with reference to Fig. 1; but the rear end strip 2 isintegral and is plain at the end, so that it may be cut or milled to the desired length, and it is connected with the end pieces 4 5 by corv ner-pieces 7 having fastening-lugs 6.
A common feature shown in the devices of Figs. 1 and 3 is the forming of each of the end strips 2 and 3 with two plain ends which 65 can be cut or milled to length. This simplities the construction of the stove and affords the advantages which I have noted above.
I claiml. A stove-top comprising marginal metal castings, the front casting having-two plain, machined ends adapted to abut against the side castings and the divided rear casting having two finished ends, each with an adjacent side lug to receive a machined end of its corresponding side casting, and two machined ends to receive the central pipe-section; substantially as described.
2. A stove-top comprising a rear metal casting having a middle stovepipe-Section pro- 8O vided with fastening devices at its ends, and outer sections having plain ends adapted to be trimmed and to abut against the middle section; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
WILLIAM C. KNEALE. Witnesses:
