RECEPTACLE.
y Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 8, 1912.
Application filed January 29, 1912. Serial No. 674,057.
To au whom t may concern Be it known that I, JoHNF. PATTERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to receptacles adapted to hold cards or stamps; and the prime object of my improvement is to present a simple and inexpensive device whereby a stamp or calling card can be instantly separated from a pile thereof and brought to a position in which it can be easily grasped by the lingers.
My receptacle will be found especially useful as an article to be carried in the pocket or shopping bag, and an attractive feature lies in the fact that but one hand is required for its manipulation.
These desiderata, as well as other advantages to be observed in an examination of the following portions of this description and the appended claim, I attain by the combination of parts and construction illustrated in the accompanying1 drawings.
Figure l is a perspective view of the preferred form of my receptacle as the same would be carried in the pocket; Fig. 2 a view similar to Fig. l, showing the lid or cover-member thrown back and the devices atiixed to the under surface thereof; and Fig. 3 a vertical longitudinal section of the receptacle as shown in Fig. l.
Throughout the several views like numerals refer to like parts.
In carrying my invention into practice I provide a receptacle of any suitable size or shape to which is hingedly connected, as at 1, a lid or cover-member 2, the same having a length and breadth slightly less than the length and breadth of the bottom of the receptacle 3. To the under surface of said lid there is secured a member l, preferably made of rubber or cork, and from said member is projected a small needle-point 5, the extent of projection of said point substantially corresponding to the thickness of a stamp or other article which it is intended to transtix.
Disposed at one end of lid 2 is a spring 6 serving to instantly raise said lid when the same is released from engagement with catch 7, the latter being a valuable element of my invention and consisting of a rod 7 revolubly secured to the front of the receptacle proper and terminating in arms or lugs 7b, 7C.
In operation, when it is desired to remove a stamp, the receptacle is held in the palm of the hand and lid 2 slightly depressed by the thumb, the .latter member releasing arm 70 from engagement with said lid. The pressure of the thumb being then removed the lid is forced to an upright position through the agency of spring and a stamp is found ailixed to point 5. Upon removal oit' the stamp lid 2 is brought to a position over the entrance to the receptacle and arm 7 swung inwardly thereovcr through movement of arm 7" by the index finger.
From the fact, before noted, that the dimensions of lid 9. are smaller than those oi' the bottom of the receptacle 3, which permits of the depression of said lid within the receptacle proper, it is obvious that point 5 may be brought into contact with a stamp or card lying at the bottom of said receptacle, the latter being covered with felt or cardboard to prevent injury to said point.
Though the pre'lrred form of the device is herein described I do not wish to be understood as conlining myself thereto, and the right is reserved of making such change in the character, arrangement and construe tion of the various elements as may fairly fall within the scope of the following claim.
IV hat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is t- An article of the character described comprising a receptacle, a cover-member adapt ed to move within said receptacle, means for securing said member over the entra-nce to said receptacle, mechanism for automatically raising said member, and devices adapted to lift a portion of the receptaclecontents upon operation of said mechanism.
In testimony whereof I al'iix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOI-IN F. PATTERSON.
