Description

本申請案根據35 U.S.C. §119(e)主張來自2009年5月11日申請之題為「DRIVING METHODS AND WAVEFORMS FOR ELECTROPHORETIC DISPLAY」的美國臨時申請案第61,177,204號之優先權之權利,出於所有目的,該申請案之全部內容如同在本文中充分闡明般以參考方式併入。
本發明係關於用於顯示裝置(特定言之,電泳顯示器)之驅動方法及波形。
電泳顯示器(EPD)為基於在溶劑中懸浮之帶電顏料粒子之電泳現象的非發射裝置。該顯示器通常包含具有相互相對地置放之電極的兩個板。該等電極中之一者通常係透明的。由著色溶劑及帶電顏料粒子構成之懸浮液封入於該兩個板之間。當在兩個電極之間施加電壓差時,顏料粒子根據電壓差之極性遷移至一側或另一側。結果,可在檢視側看到顏料粒子之色彩或溶劑之色彩。一般而言,可藉由單極或雙極做法驅動EPD。
本發明係針對用於顯示裝置(特定言之,電泳顯示器)之驅動方法及波形。
第一態樣係針對一種用於將顯示裝置自第一影像驅動至第二影像之方法,其中藉由第二色彩之背景顯示第一色彩之影像,該方法包含在將該第二色彩之像素直接驅動至該第一色彩前將該第一色彩之像素直接驅動至該第二色彩。在一具體實例中,該第一色彩為深色或黑色且該第二色彩為淺色或白色,或該第一色彩為淺色或白色且該第二色彩為深色或黑色。在一具體實例中,該方法進一步包含雙推,其推動顯示單元中之帶電顏料粒子,而不引起色彩改變。

圖1說明在可由本文中所呈現之驅動方法中之任一者驅動的多像素顯示器100中之電泳顯示單元10a、10b及10c之典型陣列。在圖1中,在前檢視側上,電泳顯示單元10a、10b、10c具備共同電極11(其通常為透明的)。在電泳顯示單元10a、10b及10c之相對側(亦即,後側)上,基板(12)分別包括離散像素電極12a、12b及12c。像素電極12a、12b及12c中之每一者界定多像素電泳顯示器100之個別像素。然而,實務上,複數個顯示單元可與一離散像素電極相關聯,或複數個像素可與一顯示單元相關聯。像素電極12a、12b、12c可在形式上分段而非像素化,進而界定待顯示的影像之區域而非個別像素。因此,雖然在本發明中頻繁地使用術語「像素」來說明驅動實施方案,但該等驅動實施方案亦適用於分段之顯示。
若基板12及像素電極為透明的,則亦可自後側檢視顯示裝置。
在電泳顯示單元10a、10b、10c中之每一者中填充電泳流體13。電泳顯示單元10a、10b、10c中之每一者由顯示單元壁14封入。
帶電粒子在顯示單元中之移動係由施加至與該顯示單元相關聯之共同電極及像素電極的電壓電位差確定。
作為實施例,帶電粒子15可帶正電,以使得無論像素電極與共同電極中何者處於與帶電粒子15之電壓電位相反的電壓電位下,帶電粒子15皆將被吸引至像素電極或共同電極。若將同一極性施加至顯示單元中之像素電極及共同電極,則接著帶正電之顏料粒子將被吸引至具有較低電壓電位之電極。
在本申請案中,術語「驅動電壓」用以指由像素區中的帶電粒子經歷之電壓電位差。舉例而言,若將零電壓施加至共同電極且將+15 V施加至像素電極,則該像素區中的帶電顏料粒子之「驅動電壓」將為+15 V。
在另一具體實例中,帶電顏料粒子15可帶負電。
帶電粒子15可為白色。且,如將對一般熟習此項技術者顯而易見的是,帶電粒子可為深色且分散於淺色之電泳流體13中以提供視覺上可辨別之足夠的對比度。
亦可用透明或淡色電泳流體13及具有載運相反粒子電荷之兩個不同色彩及/或具有不同電動特性之帶電粒子15製造電泳顯示器。
電泳顯示單元10a、10b、10c可為習知有壁式類型或分割類型、微囊封類型或微杯類型,其皆涵蓋在本發明之範疇內。在微杯類型中,可用頂部密封層密封電泳顯示單元10a、10b、10c。在電泳顯示單元10a、10b、10c與共同電極11之間亦可存在黏著層。
如所陳述,可藉由雙極做法或單極做法驅動顯示裝置。
對於雙極應用,有可能同時將諸區自第一色彩更新至第二色彩且亦將諸區自第二色彩更新至第一色彩。雙極做法不需要共同電極之調變,且可(如所陳述)在僅一個驅動階段中完成自一影像至另一影像之驅動。
對於單極應用,在兩個驅動階段中將像素驅動至其指定之色彩狀態。在第一階段中,將選定像素自第一色彩驅動至第二色彩。在第二階段中,將其餘像素自第二色彩驅動至第一色彩。
術語「二元系統」指可按兩個對比色彩顯示影像之顯示裝置。舉例而言,其可為白色背景上之黑色或黑色背景上之白色。在更一般描述中,二元系統具有第二色彩背景上之第一色彩。第一及第二色彩為視覺上可辨別之任兩個色彩。
圖2a為展示在二元系統中一實例做法之驅動方法及波形將一影像驅動至另一影像的方式之實施例。圖2a之左側的第一影像被驅動至中央之過渡影像且接著至圖2a之右側的第二影像。使用電子數位分段顯示來顯示影像,且該等影像由分別標記為I至VII之七個片段組成。
在圖2a之實施例中,假定帶正電之白色顏料粒子分散於黑色溶劑中。顯示裝置能夠藉由白色背景顯示黑色影像。
第一初始影像(表示數字「3」)具有五個黑色片段(I、III、IV、VI及VII)及兩個白色片段(II及V)。第二影像(表示「6」)具有六個黑色片段及僅一個白色片段(III)。本發明之驅動波形用以將第一影像驅動至第二影像。在兩個影像之間,片段I、IV、VI及VII保持黑色,而片段III自黑色改變至白色,且片段II及V自白色改變至黑色。
在自第一影像至第二影像之過渡期間,如圖2a中藉由第一影像與第二影像之間的過渡影像展示,片段I、IV、VI及VII保持不變。然而,與過去做法不同,在片段II及V自白色改變至黑色前,片段III自黑色改變至白色。第一過渡步驟將待變為白色之所有黑色片段切換至白色,且第二過渡步驟將待變為黑色之所有白色片段切換至黑色。
圖2a展示藉由利用本發明之做法之驅動方法及波形,在將黑色像素驅動至白色且將白色像素驅動至黑色時,在白色像素至黑色的色彩改變前,發生黑色像素至白色的色彩改變。換言之,不同時發生黑色至白色之色彩改變及白色至黑色之色彩改變。
本發明之單極驅動方法與先前做法不同。在先前做法中,第一色彩之像素及第二色彩之像素將皆被驅動至一色彩(第一色彩或第二色彩),且接著個別驅動至其指定之色彩狀態。該等方法因此具有閃爍外觀及較長驅動時間之缺點。
在一個本發明做法之單極驅動方法中,第一色彩之像素被直接驅動至第二色彩,且第二色彩之像素被直接驅動至第一色彩,且兩個驅動步驟依次發生。
本發明之第一態樣係針對一種用於在二元系統中將第一影像驅動至第二影像之方法,其中藉由第二色彩之背景顯示第一色彩之影像,該方法包含在將該第二色彩之像素直接驅動至該第一色彩前將該第一色彩之像素直接驅動至該第二色彩。
在藉由白色背景顯示黑色影像之實施例中,藉由應用本發明之方法以將第一影像驅動至第二影像,在將白色像素直接驅動至黑色前,將黑色像素直接驅動至白色。同樣地,在藉由黑色背景顯示白色影像之實施例中,藉由應用本發明之方法以將第一影像驅動至第二影像,在將黑色像素直接驅動至白色前,將白色像素直接驅動至黑色。
可按包括分段顯示及非分段之基於像素之顯示的許多形式之顯示使用本發明之做法。如圖2b中所示,亦可達成較複雜的像素化之影像過渡。在第一過渡步驟(自第一影像「X」過渡至中間影像)中,將變為白色之黑色像素(例如,2/0[x/y]、3/1、6/1、5/3、2/4、5/4、6/4、1/5、2/5、6/5及7/5)已切換至白色,且在第二過渡步驟(自中間影像過渡至第二影像「Y」)中,將變為黑色之白色像素切換至黑色(例如,0/0、1/1、6/1、2/2、4/4、3/5及4/5)。
圖3演示此驅動方法。在此實施例及圖4及圖5之實施例中,顏料粒子帶正電,且具有白色或淺色色彩。顏料粒子分散於深色溶劑中。
在一具體實例中,驅動波形具有兩個驅動階段(表示為I及II)。存在五個波形,分別針對共同電極、與黑色像素至黑色之過渡相關聯、與黑色像素至白色之過渡相關聯、與白色像素至黑色之過渡相關聯及與白色像素至白色之過渡相關聯。
黑色至黑色及白色至白色之波形與共同電極之波形相同。此情形指示將不驅動不經歷色彩改變之像素。
對於黑色至白色波形,色彩在階段I中自黑色切換至白色,且在階段II中保持白色。對於白色至黑色波形,色彩在階段I中保持白色,且在階段II中切換至黑色狀態。如所演示,在自白色至黑色(在階段II中)的色彩改變前發生自黑色至白色的色彩改變(在階段I中)。
第二態樣係針對第一態樣之驅動方法,其進一步包含雙推。
術語「雙推」指將正或負驅動電壓施加至像素以縮短視覺過渡時間。
此驅動方法演示於圖4中。圖4之方法包含三個驅動階段(Ia、Ib及II)。階段Ia及Ib一起之持續時間接近圖3中的階段I之持續時間。在階段Ia中,將負驅動電壓(例如,-2 V)施加至待驅動至白色的黑色像素。在此階段中,進一步推動白色粒子,但未觀測到色彩改變。黑色像素在階段Ib中切換至白色,且在階段II中保持處於白色狀態下。階段Ia之存在縮短自黑色狀態至白色狀態之驅動時間(在階段Ib中,與圖3中的階段I相比),因此加速色彩過渡。即使藉由雙推做法縮短了驅動時間,但白色狀態之反射性並未受到損害。
類似地,對於待驅動至黑色狀態之白色像素,在階段Ia中,未施加驅動電壓,接著在階段1b中施加正驅動電壓(+2V),進而使白色像素在於階段II中切換至黑色狀態前保持白色。在一具體實例中,待驅動至黑色之白色像素的階段1b之持續時間可縮短以提供自白色至黑色之較短的視覺過渡。但在任一情況下,在於階段II中發生白色至黑色之色彩改變前,發生黑色至白色之色彩改變(在階段1b中)。
在圖4中未驅動保持黑色之黑色像素及保持白色之白色像素。
第三態樣係針對一種用於在二元系統中將第一影像驅動至第二影像之驅動方法,其中藉由第二色彩之背景顯示第一色彩之影像,該方法包含在將該第二色彩狀態之像素直接驅動至第二中間色彩狀態前將該第一色彩狀態之像素直接驅動至第一中間色彩狀態。在一具體實例中,第一色彩狀態為黑色,且第二色彩狀態為白色。「中間」色彩狀態為第一色彩狀態與第二色彩狀態之間的色彩。若第一色彩狀態為黑色且第二色彩狀態為白色,則中間色彩狀態可顯現為灰色。在一具體實例中,第一及第二中間色彩處於不同灰度或其他中間著色度下。在另一具體實例中,第一及第二中間色彩處於同一灰度或其他中間著色度下。
圖5為此驅動方法之一實施例。對於待直接驅動至一灰度之黑色像素,黑色像素在階段I之第一部分(標為T1)中被驅動至灰色狀態且保持灰色。對於待驅動至一灰度之白色像素,白色像素在階段II之第一部分(T2)中被驅動至一灰度。因此,在白色至灰色之改變前,發生黑色至灰色之改變。圖5之廣泛做法可用於具有兩個對比色彩及任一中間色彩之任何組合的顯示中。
在一具體實例中,灰色之程度由所施加之脈衝之長度確定。在圖5中,對於黑色像素,當T1增加時,灰色變得較淺,且對於白色像素,當T2增加時,灰色變得較深。
在所有具體實例中,關於驅動波形階段之術語「在……前」、「在……後」及「後續」未必暗示或需要諸階段之間的時間延遲。如圖3、圖4及圖5中所示,後續階段可在先前階段後瞬間開始。
在圖3至圖5中,電壓V可為15伏特,但其他具體實例可使用其他電壓位準。

Claims (13)
