Abstract

A metallurgical lance 27a for injecting solid particulate material into a vessel comprises a central conveyor tube 31 mounted within a lance housing 30 that includes an annular cooling jacket 32 surrounding the conveyor tube 31. Conveyor tube 31 comprises a series of wear resistant cast metal tubes 81 disposed end to end and joined together by joining sleeves 82 fitted about ends of adjacent tubes. Tube 31 has an outwardly projecting rear end flange 92 by which it is connected to lance housing 30 and it is centred within annular water jacket 32 by a series of spacer collars 83 projecting outwardly from the tube at longitudinally spaced locations to engage the inner periphery of the jacket 32. The joining sleeves 82 and spacer collars 83 are interconnected by sets of circumferentially spaced connector straps 97 to form a cage structure 98 that surrounds the cast tubes 81. Cage structure 98 is connected to end flange 92 through a set of end connector straps 99 and can serve as a load bearing structure that will contain the cast metal tubes 81 in the event of tensile failure of one or more of those tubes.
