Unambiguous, bidirectional Arabic-Latin transliteration scheme and textual data input system with Arabic alphabet keys arranged in accordance with said transliteration scheme. The method includes the use of Latin graphemes to correspond strings in the Arabic language to strings that only contain ASCII characters and vice versa. The method allows a keyboard operator who is not proficient with the classical Arabic layout to employ a known keyboard layout to input Arabic text in an intuitive manner by applying the transliteration scheme. The present invention also allows to register Arabic text without resorting to the Unicode encoding.
