Abstract

Fine particulate ferroalloys, consisting mainly of manganese, chromium and/or silicon, are processed by (a) sepg. Mn-, Cr- and/or Si-contg. material into a coarse fraction, pref. of particle size 1-2 mm, and a fine fraction; and (b) adding the coarse fraction at the top and injecting the fine fraction (using a carrier gas) below the surface of a melt having approx. the same compsn. as or contg. the same alloying elements as the alloy to be processed. The two fractions are melted by heat supplied to the melt by induction heaters. The process allows recycling of fines produced during crushing of cast ferroalloys and is esp. useful for refined ferro- manganese prodn. from such fines.
