Bed pad for patients

The subject of the invention is a bed pad for patients, which includes a liquid-impermeable pad and a liquid-absorbent layer attached to it.

It is often advantageous to protect the patient bed from the patient's excretions with a bed pad. A liquid-impermeable base made of simple rubber, plastic or the like can serve as such.

As an alternative to the above, a bed pad has been used in which a moisture absorbent layer is attached to a square piece which is essentially the width of the bed. A baby diaper, for example, can serve as a model for such a bed pad.

Such documents have the disadvantage that the excretions spread easily over the edges of the base and the protective purpose is then not achieved. An inconvenience also arises from the fact that bed sheets of this type slip easily under the patient. With the bed pad according to the invention, the above inconveniences are avoided. It is characteristic of such a pad that the liquid-impermeable pad is shaped considerably wider than the patient bed, that the liquid-absorbing part is essentially as wide or somewhat narrower than the patient bed, and that the liquid-absorbing layer is provided with a liquid barrier which prevents the liquid absorbed by the absorbent member from flowing into the bed.

The liquid impervious backing can be made of plastic, rubber or other liquid impervious material, and liquid absorbent pulp or other porous material.

The liquid absorbent layer can also be very thin, even of the size class 1 mm, but on the other hand it can be up to many centimeters thick.

If the bed mat is manufactured according to the above principle, the strips of the moisture-impermeable mat, which extend beyond the edges of the bed and on which there is no absorbent part, can either come under the mattress pad or hang over the edge of the bed.

As an alternative, it should also be mentioned that the base in question, which is wider than the bed and made of liquid-impermeable material, consists of two or more, preferably three, parts. Such a pad made of three parts is easy to manufacture from the technical point of view by connecting suitable strips of the same material as the central part or of a different material to the central part on the side of the moisture-impermeable part of the base pad, which is located under the absorbent surface will.

So that the bed pad produced in the above manner fulfills its purpose, the absorbent middle part is to be manufactured in such a way that it absorbs enough water in a suitable manner. A suitable way is to use cellulose fibers as the actual absorbent part, these loose cellulose fibers being held in place by a non-woven covering. A possible suitable alternative could be that the liquid absorbent part consists only of a sufficient number of layers of non-woven type material, "fabric".

The liquid-absorbing layer is to be insulated in such a way that no liquid can flow into the patient bed from the respective layer under normal conditions. This is achieved by the moisture-absorbing layer being suitably provided with a liquid barrier on all sides.

A possible suitable way of achieving a liquid barrier would be to use a suitable tool to attach a coherent square part with a sufficiently large opening in the middle to the absorbent layer. This square portion is bonded to the sides of the liquid impervious backing by heat treatment or other suitable means. The liquids absorbed by the liquid-absorbing layer cannot then flow past the liquid barrier into the patient bed.

Of course, it should be added to the above that the liquid barrier must be as wide and as high as the situation, i.e. to prevent liquid leakage is required.

The same end result as above is achieved by attaching the liquid absorbent layer to the liquid impermeable layer with four cross-wise arranged rubber, plastic or similar strips, which at the corners with each other and at the outer edges on the moisture impermeable layer, i.e. be attached to the pad.

The invention is illustrated below with the aid of the attached pictures, which show an embodiment of the invention.

A suitable construction of the bed pad 1 is shown in detail in Figures 1-3. Mainly, the bed pad is formed so that the moisture absorbent layer 4 of the bed pad 1 is arranged on part 3 of the liquid-impermeable base pad 2, 3 and is held by the covering 5 of the non-woven type. The side strips 2 are fastened to the edges of the central part 3 of the base pad 2, 3. With the side stripes 2, the bed pad 1 can be firmly attached to the bed.

The bed base 1 is produced in a suitable manner such that a layer 4 formed from cellulose fibers is arranged on the part 3 of the liquid-impermeable base base 2, 3 and a covering 5 of the non-woven type, as shown in FIG. 3, is arranged on this layer will. If it is considered to be advantageous, the covering 5 can be attached separately with the edges to part 3 of the base pad, the liquid-absorbing layer being connected for the next working phase.

If desired, a square border 6 can be created on the mentioned underlay material, as shown in Figure 2a, by forming the square border 6 from four separate strips 7, which are at the corners with one another and at the outer edges on part 3 the moisture-impermeable base pad 2,3 are attached. The bed pad 1 is preferably used as shown in Figure 4. The bed pad 1 can be firmly attached to the patient's bed when the side strips 2 come under the mattress pad. Within the scope of the above, the bed pad according to the invention can be formed in several different ways, depending on the machine equipment available to the manufacturer. In its simplest form, the bed mat can even be made without actual machines if only scissors, glue accessories and a suitable work table are available. On the other hand, for example, a highly developed automatic system can be used to connect the individual parts, although the requirements of the manufacturing process can of course affect the execution of the details.
