Necessariamente, quindi le lame di taglio debbono essere tenute affilate mediante dischi di affilatura o mole che periodicamente o costantemente vengono portate a contatto con il profilo della lama di taglio. Normalmente, per ogni lama di taglio vengono montate due mole, in posizioni sfalsate lungo la circonferenza della lama, una delle quali è rivolta verso una faccia della lama di taglio e l’altra è rivolta verso la faccia opposta. Tali mole sono messe in rotazione, ad esempio, tramite motori elettrici, turbine ad aria e simili e il loro avanzamento verso la lama di taglio è provocato da cilindri pneumatici, idraulici o attuatori similari.
