Abstract

Suspension of coal in water contains two separately-prepd. groups of particles differing in size, together with a polyelectrolyte and opt. a stabiliser. The mean size of the first group of particles is pref. between 210 and 60 microns, and the mean size of the second group is pref. 1/6th to 1/20th of that of the first: all particles are smaller than 300 microns. The first group pref. comprises more than 40 wt.%, esp. about 60 wt.% of the coal. Used for storage or combustion of coal. The suspension can be very conc. (80 wt.% or above). The coal may contain inert components. The water can contain salts at concns. of 0-40 g/l or more: sea water can be used.
