Abstract
The flux consists of a mixt. of 40-70% aluminous and/or alumina prodn. residues with one or more of 10-20% clay, 10-20% marl, 5-20% sodium carbonate, 5-10% borax, 5-30% nepheline and 5-10% bentonite. The flux may contain 2-8% of a reducing mixt., pref. comprising 1 part CaC2, 1-2 parts NaOH, 2 parts Na2CO3, 2 parts clay and 3 parts limestone, and is pref agglomerated using a pitch, tar or molasses binder. The flux gives rapid formation of a reactive desulphurising/ dephosphorising slag when used with lime or limestone slag-formers. The slag has a basicity ratio of 3.5-3.7 and gives reduced erosion of refractory linings.
