Abstract
A high intensity laser beam is focussed onto a point on the metal and an intense jet of O2 is directed on to the surface in this region. A reaction instantaneously takes place and a pool of liq. metal is formed. The jet of O2 is maintained until the pool has spread out to the desired width. Additives such as wires or metal powders are no longer essential for achieving the ignition temp. of the workpiece. Grooves without burres can be obtd. instantaneously without using additives or an electric arc.
