Abstract
1322303 Igniter plugs GENERAL MOTORS CORP 17 Feb 1972 [25 Feb 1971] 7334/72 Heading F1B An igniter plug suitable for continuous sparking operation for extended periods of time at elevated temperatures of up to and including 1093‹C, comprises a shell body 2 forming the ground electrode, an insulator 5 and a centre electrode 9 positioned so that a spark gap 21 is formed in which the electrical discharges between the centre electrode and the ground electrode occur across the surface of the insulator exposed between the centre electrode and the ground electrode. The portion of the ground electrode adjacent the spark gap is formed of an annular insert 19 of ductile iridium metal having a high oxidation and spark erosion resistance at the elevated temperature. The annular insert 19 is welded to the shell body 2 by a narrow weld zone in which the iridium metal is both well-alloyed with the metal of the shell body and displays a minor degree of recrystallization. The weld zone between the shell and the insert is preferably achieved by a high energy narrow beam welding technique such as electron or laser beam welding. The spark gap may be exterior of the plug.
