Abstract

1416416 Producing discontinuous fibrils SOLVAY & CIE 12 March 1974 [12 March 1973 26 Nov 1973] 10976/74 Heading B5B Discontinuous fibrils are produced by suddenly releasing the pressure on a two-phase liquid (as defined) comprising a molten polymer and a latent solvent (as defined). The liquid mixture is at a temperature and pressure high enough, and has a concentration of polymer such that, the mixture is both liquid and two-phase. The reduction of pressure is so performed that the mixture is rapidly ejected through an orifice in the form of an ejection cone, the latent solvent evaporating and the polymer solidifying instantaneously. The ejection cone is atomized, a preferred atomizer arrangement being illustrated in Fig. 4 where the cone issuing from spinneret 1 is atomized by rotating toothed wheel 2. In examples fibrils are made from high density polyethylene, with n-hexane being used as the latent solvent. [GB1416416A]
