1396302 Growth-promoting &c compositions CIBA-GEIGY AG 26 April 1972 [27 April 1971 2 Feb 1972 3 March 1972 (2)] 11492/71 4788/72 10021/72 and 10022/72 Heading A5B [Also in Division C2] Novel compounds II in which R 1 is C 1-3 alkyl, R 2 is hydrogen or C 1-3 alkyl and X is chloro or NR 3 R 4 (in which R 3 is hydrogen, C 1-3 alkyl, hydroxy C 1-3 alkyl, C 2-4 alkenyl C 1-3 alkoxy C 1-3 alkyl or hydroxy, and R 4 is R 3 other than hydoxy- or R 3 and R 4 form a C 4-6 polymethylene chain optionally interrupted by oxygen) and the S-N oxides and acid addition salts of compounds in which X is NR 3 R 4 are anti-microbial agents. Compounds II in which X is NR 3 R 4 their S-N- oxides and acid addition salts form with a carrier or diluent a pharmaceutical composition which may be administered orally or parenterally; they may be added to animal feedstuffs to promote growth or used to protect organic material from bacterial or nucrobial attack. The compositions may also include 5, 7-dichloro-2-methyl-8-quinolinol; sulphamerazine or sulphafurazole; chloramphenicol or tetracyline; 3, 4', 5-tribromocalicylanilide; halogenated carbonilides, benzoxazoles or benzoxazolones; polychloro-hydroxy-diphenylmethanes; halogen-dihydoxy-diphenyl sulphines; 4, 4'- dichloro-2-hydroxyl-diphenylether or 2, 4, 4'- trichloro-2-hydroxy-diphenylether; bactericidal quaternary compounds, or dithiocarbonic acid derivatives (tetra methyl thiuran disulphide) carriers having favourable pharmacological properties may be used; sulphur as a powder base or zinc stearate as an ointment base.
