Abstract

1366703 Foamed coatings MONSANTO Ltd 12 May 1972 [4 June 1971] 18930/71 Heading B2E [Also in Division D1] A process for the production of a laminate comprises extruding a foamable synthetic thermoplastic resin through a slit die and thence into an aperture defined by a pair of opposed surfaces, one being static and the other the surface of a flexible substrate material carried on a heated driven roller rotating about an axis parallel to the slit so as to cause the substrate material to move in the direction of extrusion, the dimensions of the aperture and the movement of the substrate material being such that the foaming resin remains in contact with both surfaces for at least part of its passage therebetween and such that contact between the resin and the substrate material takes place while the resin is still above its softening point and before foaming of the resin is complete. Preferably, the resin is extruded at from 10 to 80‹C above the softening point of the resin. The driven roller is preferably heated to a temperature within 10‹C below the softening point of the resin. Before the thermoplastic resin is completely hardened its surface can be brought into contact with the second roller which may be plain or embossed. Suitable substrate materials are woven cotton or jute scrim. Light-weight woven or non-woven fabrics of natural fibre or from cellulose ester, nylon or acrylic fibre, and paper such as Kraft paper or a thermoplastic film such as PVC, polystyrene or polyethylene film may also be used as a substrate. Suitable thermoplastic resins are polymers or copolymers of ethylene, propylene, butadiene, styrene, vinyl toluene, or alpha-methyl styrene or a substitute monomer such as acrylonitrile, vinyl or vinylidene chloride, vinyl acetate, methyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate or ethyl acrylate.
