Abstract

1,158,471. Embossing. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 12 July, 1967 [22 July, 1966], No. 33069/66. Heading B6J. Suede-like material is produced by impressing a thermoplastic sheet material which has been heated to render the surface plastic, with an embossing surface having a multiplicity of surface indentations having a depth in excess of 0À002 inch and a surface density in excess of 400 indentations per square inch, the embossing surface being made of a silicone elastomer having a Young's Modulus selected from the range 250-1000 pounds per square inch, and separating the embossed sheet from the surface. The embossing surface may be a plate or roller, the embossing pressure may be 10-1000 pounds per square inch, and the embossing temperature (when treating vinyl polymers and copolymers e.g. plasticized P.V.C.) may be 80-200‹ C. The sheet material may be heated by infra-red radiation or by contact with a hot platen. The sheet material may be coated with a dissimilar thermoplastic material, e.g. a polymer of methyl methacrylate, before embossing.
