Abstract
1335378 Pressurized dispensing containers RIKER LABORATORIES Inc 12 Nov 1970 [13 Nov 1969] 53959/70 Heading F1R [Also in Division A5] An inhalation-responsive dispenser for use with an aerosol container 28 has a metering valve 36 for dispensing a metered amount of aerosol from said container, said metering valve having a member 50 movable relative to the container to place the metering valve in either a charging or a discharging position, the dispenser comprising a housing 22 formed with a mouthpiece 42 to which is connected an air passage 44, a main spring 72 for biasing the member 50 of the metering valve to its discharging position, a charging apparatus 80 for restraining the spring 72 to allow the member 50 to be placed in its charging position, a latch assembly 110 mounted on said housing for releasably retaining said metering valve in its charging position, and and inhalation responsive device 98 in said air passage for releasing said latch assembly 110 to place the metering valve 36 in its discharging position. A cover 134 for said mouthpiece, pivotally mounted on said housing, is connected to an actuator 130 which is responsive to movement of the cover for activating said charging apparatus 80 and said latch assembly 110. The metering valve 36 is engageable with a seat 38 communicating through a passage 40 with the mouthpiece 42. The metering valve includes a housing member 48 within the container 28 and reciprocable in the housing 48 is the metering valve member 50 having a tubular stem 52 which projects into the seat 38 through an annular seal 54, said stem 52 having a lateral port 56. When the container 28 is in its upper position a compression spring 58 biases the metering valve member 50 into its charging position, the port 56 being located externally of the annular seal 54 and aerosol enters the valve 36 through a passage 66. When the container is moved downwardly under the influence of spring 72 the metering valve member 50 is in its discharging position, the port 56 being located inwardly of the sealing ring 54 (as shown in Fig.7) and aerosol is prevented from entering the valve 36 by a collar 62 which closes the passage 66. The inhalation responsive device 98 includes a vane 100 pivotally mounted in the housing 22 and disposed in the air passage 44.
