Abstract

992, 895. Needled felts. HUYCK CORPORATION. Dec. 3, 1963 [Jan. 11, 1963], No. 47631/63. Heading D1R. [Also in Division B5] A paper machine felt comprises a woven base fabric having a batt of fibres needled thereto in such a way that the majority of the loops formed by the needling operation lie in planes extending in the cross machine direction of the felt. The batt of fibres is laid on the base fabric in such a manner that the fibres extend substantially in the cross machine direction and needling is carried out employing needles the barbs of which lie parallel to or at least at an angle of not more than 35 degrees to the machine direction of the felt. Needles of various cross-sections may be employed (Figs. 4-11 not shown) having barbs which extend in preferably not more than two directions, the preferred section being triangular. Where, as shown, needles 13 are used having barbs 13a which extend only in one direction from the needle axis, the barbs 13a preferably face in the opposite direction to that in which the base fabric 10, 11 and batt of fibres 12 is advanced. Laying of the fibres of the batt in the cross machine direct ion may be achieved by lapping upon itself a carded web of fibres. The lapped batt of fibres may then be fed on to an endless belt of woven base fabric (Fig. 13 not shown) and needling may be repeated till the desired texture is achieved. After needling is completed the felt may be reversed and a further batt of fibres applied to the reverse side and needled thereto in the same manner as previously described.
