Abstract

992,875. Physiological measuring apparatus. C. M. BLUMENFELD. April 24, 1963 [May 8, 1962], No. 16135/63. Heading A5K. [Also in Division G1] A sedimentation recorder comprises a sample holder 42 for receiving a test tube 45 containing a liquid sample, e.g. blood, and a timer 22 for switching on a lamp 10 for or after a predetermined period of time to pass light through the sample on to a film 36 to obtain a record of sedimentation level either over the period or at the end of the period. Apparatus for making a continuous record over a period, Figs. 1, 2, includes a switch 18 operated by a time controlled cam 20 and controlling the supply of current to the lamp 10 and motor 30. The motor drives the film 36 at constant speed past the tube 45 disposed in a groove 46 in a translucent plastic block 48 held in an opaque support 50 with flanges 52 making a light-tight fit against the sides of case 12 and vertical slot 54 allowing light to enter the block 48 and diffuse into the sample. After the period preset on the times 22 the film is removed and developed to produce a curve, representing the rate of sedimentation and reference lines derived from graduation marks 66 on the tube. Apparatus for photographing the sedimentation level at the end of a preset period and for loading and developing the film, Figs. 4 to 8 (not shown) includes a photographic paper holder which is attached successively to a supply box for loading, a box containing a sample holder, lamps and timer for making an exposure and a developer tank, for producing a recorded image of the sedimentation rate. Clamping arrangements hold the film stationary for exposure to light from three lamps controlled by a timer which is set to determine the period of time before exposure and the duration of exposure.
