Abstract
997,558. Kettles; boiling vessels. CHENG KA ON, and WONG MAN-KWAN. March 26, 1964 [March 26, 1963], No. 11932/63. Heading A4A. [Also in Divisions F4 and H2] A kettle is provided with a device which cuts off the heating when the liquid therein boils. In the Figure the invention is applied to a domestic kettle 21 having a spout 23 closed during heating by a cover 24 liftable for pouring by a trigger 26 and a lid 29 held in its closed position against the opening force of a spring 31 by the engagement of a leaf spring under a clasp. The cut-off device consists of a cover 37 fitting over the end of a short tube 36 opening into the kettle, and carrying a contact 40. The tube 36 is housed in a recess in the kettle handle, the top of the recess carrying a contact 41. When the kettle boils the vapour pressure raises the cover 37 so that the contacts 40, 41 close completing a circuit through a relay coil which operates to open the heating circuit. The relay has a latching device which holds it open so that heating does not recommence when boiling ceases. A "liquid boiling" alarm may also be incorporated.
