Abstract

The temperature coefficient of permeability of carbonyl-iron powder is reduced by nitriding the powder until the combined nitrogen and carbon content lies within the range 9-10.5% by weight. The process is preferably applied to powder initially containing 0.5-2.5% of carbon and 0.4-2.6% of nitrogen, and may consist of heating the powder in a rapid flow of ammonia for 4-6 hours at 450 DEG C. The treated powder may be mixed with a suitable proportion of untreated powder to yield a product having intermediate values of coefficient of permeability.
