Abstract
1,261,757. Producing chromium or chromium nickel steel. EDELSTAHLWERKE WITTEN AG. April 1, 1969 [April 4, 1968], No.17041/69. Heading C7D. Iron containing 10-35% of chromium, optionally nickel, and carbon greater than 0À5% is refined to carbon not less than 0À2% without exceeding 1700‹C. and is then at a temperature of 1580‹-1670‹C. introduced into a vacuum treatment apparatus where it is treated with oxygen to reduce the carbon content to less than 0À03%. During the latter treatment the bath may be stirred inductively or by inert gas while an exothermically reacting element such as aluminium or silicon may be added prior to or during that treatment.
