Abstract

Shaped articles, e.g. films and fibres, made from copolymers of: (i) at least 80% of acrylonitrile, (ii) an ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid, or a substitution product thereof, and (iii) a vinylidene monomer containing at least one <FORM:0994033/C3/1> or <FORM:0994033/C3/2> group, are cross-linked by treatment with formaldehyde, a resin-forming precondensate of formaldehyde or a compound yielding formaldehyde at elevated temperatures. The examples describe the treatment with formaldehyde or a melamine-formaldehyde condensate of copolymers of acrylonitrile, methyl acrylate and, as third components, acrylamide, an unsaturated guanamine, methacryloylaminobenzenedisulphonamide, beta - ureidoethyl methacrylate, 4-methacryloylamino-benzoic acid amide, and 2 - (3 - methacryloylaminophenyl) - 4,6 - diaminotriazine-1,3,5, the copolymers being in film or fibre form. The Specification describes also the preparation of the above copolymers by copolymerization of the monomers in an aqueous medium.
