Abstract

989,997. Shaft couplings. PACIFIC-SCIENTIFIC CO. July 31, 1963 [Aug. 17, 1962], No. 30442/63. Heading F2U. [Also in Division B3] A shaft 1 is expanded to grip a member 2 by an expander having a frustoconical body 5 formed with three tapered longitudinally extending bosses 6, having tapered guideways 7 slidably receiving wedges 8. The wedges 8 are retained within the guides by a circular spring wire 9 fitting within circumferential slots 10 of the members 8. The wedges are expanded by a nut 15 screwing on a threaded stud 12 of the body 5 and acting on the wedges through a washer 13. On tightening the nut 15 the shaft 1 is distorted to a slightly triangular shape to firmly grip the member 2. The shaft 1 and the member 2 may be formed with splines 3 or may be knurled to increase the frictional grip. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 5, hollow shafts 17, 17<SP>1</SP> are coupled together by means of two joints, an expander being used in each shaft to bind it to collars 18, 18<SP>1</SP> having abutting flanges 19, 19<SP>1</SP> which are bolted together by bolts 20.
