Abstract

1,007,198. Retractable ball - point pens. H. BROSS. Aug. 15, 1963 [Aug. 16, 1962], No. 32374/63. Heading B6P. In a retractable ball-point pen of the type comprising an axially displaceable, non-rotatable actuating member such as a push button 3 with radially projecting lugs 12 having cam surfaces 19, Fig. 4, and a rotatable, axially displaceable locking member 6 with radially projecting lugs 11 having cam surfaces 19, and in which the lugs 11 and 12 co-operate with axial grooves formed in the internal surface of the pen barrel 1, the locking member 6 is spring-loaded' with a compression spring 8 which is relatively weaker than the main spring 9. The number of lugs on the locking member 6 is half the number on the actuating member 3. The grooves are arranged alternately in pairs, one groove being associated with the projected position and having a cross-section such that the lugs 11 of the locking member 6 are unable or are only partly able to be inserted in this groove. The second groove is associated with the retracted position and has a cross-section such that the cams 11 are able to be inserted further into this groove than the first groove. In Fig. 5 (not shown) the retracting mechanism is actuated by the cartridge of the ball-point pen by depressing the tip thereof. In this alternative embodiment, the grooves in the barrel have their open ends facing the rear of the pen barrel; that is in the opposite direction to the push button embodiment shown in Fig. 1. An alternative of the embodiment of Fig. 5 is to have the tip shield as the actuating member.
