Abstract

A solid propellent composition comprises a solid oxidizer and finely-divided aluminium or magnesium dispersed in a solid rubbery gel comprising a homogeneous dispersion of polyvinyl chloride in a high boiling liquid organic plasticizer which dissolves the polyvinyl chloride readily only at elevated temperature; the plasticizer is a sebacate, phthalate, or adipate, or a glycol ester of a higher fatty acid. Preferably the ratio of polyvinyl chloride to plasticizer is at least 2:3 by weight, the oxidizer is present in major proportion, and the finely divided metal in minor proportion. Suitable oxidizers are ammonium perchlorate, sodium perchlorate, potassium perchlorate, sodium nitrate, ammonium nitrate, hexanitroethane, and mannitol hexanitrate. Various plasticizers are specified, dibutyl sebacate being preferred. The propellants have increased specific impulse and burning rate and reduced pressure exponent as compared with propellents not containing finely divided metal. Moreover the presence of magnesium reduces the amount of hydrogen chloride in the combustion product. Specification 853,320 is referred to.
