Abstract
987,303. Wet spinning polyacrylonitrile fibres. MONSANTO CO. Oct. 4, 1962 [Oct. 20, 1961], No. 37591/62. Drawings to Specification. Heading B5B. Solutions of acrylonitrile polymers containing a polyglycol are wet spun to form voidfree filaments which may be cut to staple fibre length. The solution may contain from about I to about 25%, based on the weight of the polymer, of a polyglycol having an average molecular weight of 400 to 4000, preferably about 600 to 2000. The polyglycol may be a polyethylene glycol, a polypropylene glycol, or a polybutylene glycol. The polymer may comprise at least 85% by weight of acrylonitrile and up to 15% of a copolymerizable mono-olefinic monomer. The polymer may be a blend of 80 to 90% of (A) a copolymer containing 80 to 98% of acrylonitrile and 2 to 20% of a mono-olefinic monomer and from 1 to 20% of (B) a copolymer containing 10 to 70% of acrylanitrile and 30 to 90% of a vinyl substituted tertiary heterocyclic amine said blend having an overall amine content of 2 to 20% based on the weight of the blend. The solvent in the spinning solution may be N,N- dimethylacetamide dimethylsulphoxide, or ethylene carbonate. A long list is given of mono-olefinic monomers which may be copolymerized with the acrylonitrile. The amine may be vinylpyridine, a 1-vinylimidazole, or a vinyl lactam. The spinning solution may contain 8 to 30%, preferably 15 to 25%, by weight of acrylonitrile polymers. The fibres of the invention have improved resistance to fibrillation and abrasion.
