Abstract

984,909. Thermal switches; hydraulic actuation of switches; switch contacts. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. April 9, 1962 [April 17, 1961], No. 13760/61. Heading H2B. Magnetizable contacts 2, 3 in a sealed evacuated container 1 are biased toward each other by the flux from an axially magnetized permanent magnet ring 7 which may be rotated about the axis of the container to vary the biasing. In Fig. 4 the movable contact spring 6 has a hooked end 6a engaged by an insulating head 21 on an arm 17a, 17 secured in a diaphragm 12 forming one wall of the chamber 1. The arm 17 is secured to a bimetal strip 16 positioned at its other end between an adjustable screw 18 and spring 19. A separate electric heater may be provided and the bimetal or other thermal device (e.g. hot wire) may be within the chamber. The operating means may be a hydraulic capsule or bellows inside the chamber connected to a non-expansible capsule or bulb outside the chamber by a capillary tube extending through the sealed chamber wall.
