Abstract

984,217. Tunnels &c. ECONOMIC FOUNDATIONS Ltd. Aug. 31, 1962 [Sept. 18, 1961], No. 33423/61. Heading E1F. A machine for lining tunnels comprises an annular carrier having a diameter slightly less than that of the tunnel, means on the carrier for releasably holding a lining element, and means to rotate the carrier and element in the tunnel. The machine may be an independent one, but as shown is a part of a tunnel-boring machine according to Specification 894,446. A rotary cutter head 11 is mounted on a non- rotary shield 12 which is attached to an expansible reaction plate 13 by rams (not shown). The carrier comprises an element holding ring 32, and a drive ring 23 having rollers 25 engaging a track 26 supported by the shield. A motor 27 having a brake 30 is mounted on the shield and has a pinion 28 which engages a chain 29 running about the drive ring. The holding ring is adjustably mounted on the drive ring and has a series of spigots (not shown) which engage holes 42 in concrete lining element 43. An element is placed on a shoe 22 on the reaction plate and engaged by the spigots, the holding ring is rotated to permit a further element to be placed on the holding ring adjacent the first element, the process being repeated until a ring of elements are mounted on the holding ring. The ring of elements built up on the holding ring is moved by the rams to abut a previously positioned element ring. In a machine for lining with cast iron elements, the reaction plate is dispersed with, the carrier is carried by the shield, and the rams re-act against the lining.
