Abstract
1278497 Tunnelling machines K M TUNNELLING MACHINES Ltd and T E HORNCY 14 Aug 1970 [15 Aug 1969] 40970/69 Heading E1F A tunnelling machine comprises a shield 11 slidably supporting a body part which carries arms 38, the arms being rotatable about an axis extending longitudinally of the shield and being adjustable radially of the axis, and a cutting head 42 rotatably mounted on the arms. The body part is slid relative to the shield by a ram 26, and the arms are pivoted to a rotatably mounted shaft 30 and are moved by ram 39, the shaft 30 being rotated by a motor 31. A rotary hydraulic coupling 45 supplies fluid to the rams 39 and to a motor driving the cutting head. The shield 11 is advanced along the tunnel by rams (not shown) acting on a tunnel lining, and spoil is removed by a conveyor 46. In a second embodiment, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), the cutting head is slidably supported on the shaft 30 for radial movement relative to the axis. In a third embodiment, Figs. 7, 8 and 9 (not shown), which is similar to the second embodiment the ram 26 is replaced by two rams and the cutting head is moved radially of the shaft 30 by a single ram. A plurality of alternative shields having different diameters may be provided.
