Abstract
Glycerol and epichlorhydrin are obtained by contacting an aqueous solution containing a glycerol monochlorhydrin and a glycerol dichlorohydrin (e.g. from chlorination of allyl alcohol) with a base, stripping peichlorhydrin from the solution, subjecting the remaining solution to hydrolysis, and recovering glycerol. Specified bases are NaOH, Na2CO3, KOH, LiOH, ethyl trimethyl ammonium hydroxide, and Ca(OH)2 (in the last case removing Ca2+by treating the solution after epichlorhydrin removal with an ion exchange resin, prior to the hydrolysis).
