Abstract
Trimethylolethane is recovered from an aqueous solution also containing sodium formate by extracting the solution with an amyl alcohol or a mixture of amyl alcohols to produce an amyl alcohol solution of trimethylolethane and recovering trimethylolethane from this solution. Preferably the trimethylolethane is recovered from the amyl alcohol solution by extracting with water to produce an aqueous solution of trimethylolethane and crystallising the trimethylolethane from this solution after concentration. Before carrying out the aqueous extraction it is preferred to wash the amyl alcohol solution with a little water to remove dissolved sodium formate. It is preferred to carry out both extractions countercurrent with the aqueous phase as the continuous phase. The process may be used for the recovery of trimethylolethane from the solution produced by the reaction of propionaldehyde, formaldehyde and sodium hydroxide. The preferred temperature for the extraction with amyl alcohol is 70-80 DEG C. and also for the subsequent extraction with water. Specifications 790,759 and 790,760 are referred to.
