Abstract

979,587. Hoppers. BENFORD Ltd. Jan. 19, 1961 [Oct. 20, 1959], No. 35457/59. Heading B8S. [Also in Division B1] In a method and apparatus for mixing concrete the cement is supplied to the mixer separately from the damp aggregate to avoid the formation of an incrustation of wetted cement on the loading skip. The apparatus comprises a cement storage hopper 7 having a sliding gate valve 13 actuated by an hydraulic or pneumatic ram 15 and delivering to a weigh hopper 16 which in turn discharges through doors 20 actuated by a ram 8 into a shoot 22, 24, 26 delivering into the mixer at 23. The lower portion of the shoot incorporates a second duct 30 for water supplied in metered quantities through a pipe 33, see also Fig. 2 (not shown). The outlet 32 of the water duct 30 is arranged to discharge the water as a sheet or spray which impinges on the discharging cement to prevent the formation of a cloud of cement dust, as indicated by the arrows 46, 47. The curved portion 27 of the shoot may be formed as an inspection door and the storage hopper, weigh hopper and shoot may have spider-supported pointed bodies 40, 42, 38 to prevent the formation of, or disrupt, bridges of cement. The operation of the ram 8 may be linked with that of the water discharge valve 35, Fig. 2. As shown, the aggregate is loaded from a skip (not shown) into the lower part of the mixing drum mouth 11. Both the skip and the storage hopper 7 may also be associated with weighing devices; the cement in the storage hopper may be fluidized by compressed air.
