Abstract
Non-depolymerized starch, having intrinsic viscosity at least 0.3 (20 DEG C. in water) is obtained by dissolving starch in a heated aqueous solution containing electrolytes at pH8, and fractionating this solution with an organic water-miscible solvent e.g. methanol. The non-depolymerized high molecular weight fraction is then sulphated in presence of an organic base e.g. pyridine to a sulphur content of 16-19%, the resulting diester being separated as e.g. an alkali metal salt. In an example, maize starch is heated at 80-85 DEG C. in sodium hydroxide solution at pH8. A high molecular weight fraction of intrinsic viscosity 0.6 is precipitated by methanol, and is sulphated with pyridine and chlorosulphonic acid. The product has anti-peptic activity without the anti-coagulant properties usually associated with sulphated polysaccharides.
