[Also in Divisions F1 and Gl] An apparatus for raising, quickly restoring and maintaining water in an underground well at a level above the level of the contiguous water table T, comprises means 12, 13 for closing and sealing the upper end of a well casing, motor driven vacuum pump means 20, 21 for evacuating and reducing the pressure of air in the casing below atmospheric pressure, whereby atmospheric pressure acting on the water table causes water entering the well casing to rise above the level of the water table T, and switch means 26 responsive to reduced pressure in the casing and operably connected to the motor 21 of the vacuum pump 20 for operating it to maintain the reduced pressure in the casing within predetermined limits. The switch means 26 is a diaphragm switch biased to its closed position by a spring disc and opened when the pressure within the casing falls to a predetermined value. The switch may be operated manually through a knob 34. A manually operable pressure equalising valve 35 is provided to restore the pressure in casing to atmospheric pressure prior to removal of the top cover 12 secured by bolts 14. In deep wells the delivery through the outlet pipe 15 may be assisted by a jet 17 supplied with water through a pipe 16. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown), the vacuum pump, motor, switch and pressure equalising valve are remote from the well.
