Abstract

978,904. Explosive initiators. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. Sept. 6, 1962 [Dec. 27, 1961], No. 34167/62. Heading F3A. An explosive delay initiator comprises an outer shell 1 which may be of aluminium, a base charge 7 of detonating explosive, a primer 8 of heatsensitive detonating explosive, an exothermic composition 9, a capsule 11 containing between its closed end 16 and an axially bored spacer 10 a percussion-sensitive composition 12, and a booster charge 13 housed in a member 14 of ductile metal such as lead, the charge 13 abutting the closed end 16 of the capsule. The open end of shell 1 receives a low-energy fuze cord having a core 3 of detonating explosive such as PETN and abuts the booster unit 13, 14. In use, the booster charge 13, which may be of the same explosive composition as core 3 but held under a greater explosive loading, causes deformation without rupture of end 16 thereby percussively detonating composition 12. Among materials mentioned as suitable for capsule 11 are copper, copper alloys, aluminium or a suitable equivalent from polymeric material, and composition 12 may comprise lead styphnate or a mixture such as boron and red lead, magnesium, selenium and barium peroxide, bismuth, selenium and potassium chlorate, lead styphnate, tetracene and ground glass. Bore 19 in spacer 10 acts as a flash passage from composition 12 to exothermic composition 9 which among those mixtures mentioned may comprise boron and red lead or silicon and red lead or boron, red lead and dibasic lead phosphite. Substances mentioned as suitable for primer 8 include lead azide, diazodinitrophenol and mercury fulminate and for base charge 7 PETN, RDX, HMX and nitromannite. In a second embodiment, a longer delay is obtained by interposing a delay carrier between primer 8 and exothermic composition 9. To facilitate loading, composition 9 and/or 12 may be grained with, for example, neoprene, gum, shellac, polyethylene glycol or carbowaxes. Specification 815,532 is referred to.
