Abstract
977,455. Heat exchangers. H. O. SERCK, and F. ROBINSON. Aug. 27, 1962 [Nov. 1, 1961], No. 39066/61. Heading F4S. In apparatus for cooling oil, or other fluid, comprising three coaxial annular passages, the intermediate passage carrying the fluid to be cooled, and the inner and outer passages carrying cooling water in contra-flow to the fluid being cooled, the annular passages are divided into narrow axial passages by fine sheet metal panels. In an oil cooler as shown, Fig. 1, oil enters the cooler at a, passes through the annular passage c, and leaves at b, while the cooling water enters at d, flows through the inner and outer annular passages f and g, and leaves at e. A central tube i is filled with water which enters and leaves through vents j in end caps to the tube i. Corrugated sheets soldered to the annular walls divide each annular passage into a large number of parallel paths, Fig. 2, and the channels in these sheets may be provided with lateral corrugations, Figs. 5 and 7, to promote turbulent fluid flow and thus improve heat transfer. The apparatus may be of any suitable metal.
