Abstract
1,247,177. Tubular heat exchangers. DEGGENDORFER WERFT & EISENBAU, G.m.b.H. 24 Sept., 1968 [26 Sept., 1967], No. 45263/68. Heading F4S. A heat exchanger for heating or cooling a fluid circulated through reaction apparatus 14, comprises a hollow bundle of tubes 1 extending between a header 8 and an annular header 3 which encircles a fan impeller 6 for circulating the said fluid over the tubes, a deflector 9 being disposed within the tube bundle downstream of the impeller to direct the circulated fluid over the tubes. The deflector 9 extends alongside the tubes for the major portion of their length and is arranged to act as an additional heat exchange surface. As shown the deflector 9 is hollow, is included in the flow path of the tube-side fluid, and is traversed longitudinally by an open-ended tube 11 through which flows a portion of the circulated fluid. In a modification, Figs. 3 and 5 (not shown), a separate fluid flows inside the deflector. In Fig. 5, the deflector comprises a bank of closed-end return tubes (27, 28). In another form (Fig. 4) the deflector (24) contains a burner (26) for heating the circulated fluid e.g. when the reaction is endothermic. In another form (Fig. 6), the deflector consists of a central tube (32) encircled by a ring of tubes (31), replaceable electric elements being fitted in these tubes.
