An electrically ignited lighter having a hightension ignition arrangement and adapted for using butane fuel comprises a fuel valve 14 opened by a manual operating lever 1 which is held in the operative position by engagement with a pawl 4, the latter being released either manually by a horizontally displaceable lever 2 or automatically on placing the lighter on a support. The operating lever 1 is horizontally displaceable in a U-shaped carrier 3, against a spring 8. A slider 10 secured by a screw 11 to the lever 1, has a slatted end 12 which engages the plunger of the fuel valve 14 and has an indined surface which corresponds to the stroke of the plunger. The pawl 4 is rotatably mounted on a vertical shaft in the carrier 3 and has a lug 6 which is urged to engage a recess 7 in the lever 1 by means of a leaf spring 5 on a torsion spring on the vertical shaft. Another lug 26 on the pawl 4 is adapted to be engaged by a projection 18 on the manual release lever 2. The automatic release of the pawl 4 is effected by an angled lever 20 pivoted on a horizontal shaft 23 mounted on internal lugs 21, 22 of the carrier 3. One end of the lever 20 engages a lug 25 on the pawl 4 and the other end engages a plunger 19 mounted in the frame of the lighter. The plunger 19 projects through the base plate of the lighter and is actuated when the lighter is placed on its support. A projection 27 on the lever 20 opens a switch 28 when the lighter is on its support. The switch 28 is mounted on the carrier 3 and controls the ignition circuit current supply to a condenser, the ignition circuit from the condenser being closed either by a mercury switch operated by tilting of the lighter or by a switch operated by the end of the operating lever 1.
